Only place to get Krispy Kreme around here is in Canada. ...The place where you can't swing a dead cat by the tail without hitting a Timmy's. The local HS does fundraisers selling the Krispy Kreme. Some poor soul has to go up and drive them back across the border every time. I don't really see the attraction after having sampled.

That's because the Krispy Kreme of old doesn't exist anymore, now it's a creation of private equity assholes from Wall Street, the people who are always taking away things we like, and turning them into Ferraris and Porsches for themselves.

I don't think any Dunkies still actually makes them in the store. Not one that I've been to for at least 10 years, anyway. Maybe there are a few holdouts somewhere in New England if you go to an old store, but I haven't found one for a long time.
Around here, one store makes them for all of the stores in the area. Delivered early a.m. not frozen

One of my brothers clients is Dunk's and he goes to the HQ in Canton Ma a few times a year. Said they have mini stores/self serve kiosks all over the place. He said it also looks like half the company has type 2 diabetes...

My favorite donuts are at Puffy Creme Donuts in Eagan. It's a short ride on 494 across the river from Edina. The blueberry cake donut is to die for and Andrew's favorite. I sometimes send Andrew over there on a Sat morning. Unfortunately if he doesn't get there before 9AM they are almost always sold out of the blueberry. If you are ever in the Minneapolis area you owe them a try.

The best donut shop I've ever been to was a block away from my house.

^^^ my favorite childhood donut shop was Dad's Donuts on Balboa Island. More than a block away from my house, but less than 10 minutes by skateboard.

Even though donuts is in the name, Dad's is much more famous for "Balboa Bars" and bananas dipped in chocolate (like George-Michael Bluth's banana shack)

Dunkin' Donuts coffee has beaten out Starbucks in numerous blind taste tests (fwiw)

I used to work at a Starbucks while I was in grad school and the beans are absolute garbage. The reason why all starbucks coffee tastes burned and over roasted is because they roast the shit out of the beans. By roasting the beans until they are nearly black, Starbucks is able to cover up a lot of inconsistencies and imperfections in the beans. Seriously, look at the color of the beans next time you are in a store if you can. The beans should not be that dark. & a lot of starbucks beans come from Asia and Africa which are shittier coffee bean regions. Dunkin is all from Central America.

And the reason they over-roast the beans is because the flavor is consistent. They can't get a big enough supply to have continuity to all of their stores without making the house drip terrible. They are doing some "artisanal" stuff at select stores thats better with pourovers and clover machines, but on the whole the coffee is pretty dismal.

Some african and asian coffee is really good, but robusta (lower quality bean than arabica) is typically grown in Asia and Africa. Thats still not exactly relevant to this conversation though.

Starbucks doesn't buy robusta, they just ruin arabica beans by over-roasting them. They also don't need to buy top quality arabica if they plan on killing it with fire anyhow.

KK and DD donuts suck balls. If you like them, I feel sorry for you sucking down a slippery grease pick and calling it a good thing. Congdon's Donuts in Wells Beach, Maine are the real deal. Tasty, crispy exterior, warm interior, cake and raised. Best butter crunch I've ever had.

As for coffee, DD fairs better than most Starbucks. As has been pointed out, Starbucks burns theirs during roasting. The light roast DD is consistently much better brew. Still low quality by today's standards, but way better than what was available everywhere when I was a kid. I'll tend to hit a coffee shop over DD or Starbucks, but if given the choice between the two, I'll hit DD every time (unless my wife gets a gift card from a student for Starbucks. They never give her DD.)

I always found DD coffee gross but mostly because they brew it weak and half the time it's been sitting out too long and is stale or burned, and also because of their ridiculous policy of not letting you doctor it how you like (I like a smidge of sugar, just enough to take a little of the bitterness out - they've never actually managed to accomplish that for me.) Starbucks at least brews their coffee strong, and lets you put your own sugar in it. But I've never actually compared the quality of the beans themselves.

I did find this taste test online of brands in the SF Bay Area, which seems like it was conducted with a reasonable amount of diligence and where they had a barista brew and serve them all consistently. The result was that DD beans came out #2 out of 6, and Starbucks came out dead last at #6. Wouldn't have guessed that.

But in the end, neither is very good because the people brewing them generally don't give a shit. Would rather go to my local place staffed by coffee nerds who actually care about doing it right (Ozo and Boxcar being my go-tos in Boulder) - I think freshly ground beans that are brewed with care will always taste better, and I'll pay an extra $1 for that.

(And regarding donuts, I don't get the hate for Voodoo. I've only had donuts from the one in Denver, but damn son those are some really fresh and tasty donuts, way better than anything from DD. Yeah, it's a hipster haven, but whatever - I'm not there to critique the lifestyle of the employees, I'm there for the quality of the donuts.)

I've recently come back to Starbucks espresso beans after a four or five half pounds of other beans that are high rated. Sorry, still the winner. Maybe I like burnt beans.

yeah we've been over that a few times on here, DD must relinquish control of the milk and sugar if they want my business. The coffee is decent enough but weak as you said but it's intolerable with the way those ham-handed clowns doctor it up. WTF Dunkies?

Also mentioned elsewhere was ice coffee - I pretty much hate Starbucks in general but the Nitro Cold Brew is pretty good and they don't have the milk and sugar under lock and key so that's a win for Charbucks.

I'm in the same crowd, DD isn't getting my business if they won't let me choose the cream and sugar amounts.
