Yup. Diggin it. More fun to drive than outback/cross trek. In between on size. Ok clearance. Good in snow, especially with winter tires.

Yeah, well, that's what I'd like to know. Maybe I should have asked for the 100,000 mile plus owners only. But, my last two Subarus have now had serious engine issues. The 01 had the overheating issue, which they recalled and fixed for free, and now, at 105,000 on the 10, I'm looking at oil loss issues, which are well known to this vintage of Subaru, so, you know, fuck them.

FWIW, VW have improved over the years.

The VWVortex forums are quiet with respect to ongoing issues.

A couple that do stand out are:

Leaky sunroof that's the result of a poor design.

Something about an intake manifold flap. Though it's not common.

The high pressure fuel pumps used to fail on occasion. Not sure if it's still an issue.

The head unit seems to flake out.

There's also lots of people who've made it to 40-50k miles with no issues. Not that that's a barometer for anything.

There's really good deals to be had on 2017s since there is a refresh for 2018.

Keep in mind this generation of Golf has only been out since 2015 so there's not a lot of high mileage cars.

And it's a lot smaller than an Outback.

As I mentioned, I like the low roofline. I would be able to actually look down into my box, and bikes wouldn't be a stretch. Little Jap SUVs just get taller and taller.

Shit the sunroofs still leak? My 2005 Touareg had a leaky sun roof. When it dumped rain my cup holder filled with water and dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Shop could never figure it out. Got rid of that enigma when I had a kid.

Subaru's haven't been all that reliable for me either. They're good for about 120k and then they go to shit.

Get the Alltrack S without a sunroof, but with the pleather interior unlike the GSW S. I've seen some 2017's around $22k 0% interest, also great lease options if you're concerned about reliability and don't drive a ton of miles. They drive great. We want one but it's not gonna happen because I want to quit my job. 1 car payment is enough.

Just got the word on my '08 Outback (126K miles) - head gasket replacement is imminent. My guy says he expects all of them in for head gaskets after 100k.

This thread has my attention.

Yup ... last time I had to think about head gaskets was when I was a young-un ... back in the day when I owned a Fiat 124 Sport Coupe ... oil in the water, water in the oil and all that.

It's going to be decision time in the next 2-5K miles - whether the Subbie goes under head gasket surgery for the price of about 8 car payments, or is traded in.

VW has that rep in Europe. They are getting compared to French and British and Italian crap that we wouldn't touch in the US. But they're really not that bad.

I got an AllTrack as a loaner when my GTI got a new water pump. I gotta say I really liked it. I was really impressed by the how quick it was with the DSG and that little turbo 4. I'd like to get my wife one.

Have you driven a Golf recently? I think you have it backwards. The Golf and the Mazda3 feel like they are 2 generations ahead of the Impreza. Better engine, better handling, better steering, better interior, better looking. Subaru has the excellent AWD system but everything else about them is mediocre.

That said, if you buy a new Subaru (especially and Impreza hatch or Crosstrek) and drive it for four years and sell it, the depreciation is so small that it is one of the best deals around.
