    Ski Museum for Free

My 85yo Austrian friend is downsizing and looking to get rid of his old gear. It's a great collection/retrospective of the industry and would probably make a museum in itself. He patrolled at MRG for 18 years and escaped Austria with the Germans shipping half his family off to the camps. Still skis, too... If anyone is interested in any of this stuff, let me know. I'd hate to see it go to a dumpster.... but might make a great ski chair. It's all in Vermont.

The man bought some nice gear back in the day.

I don't need it, but it's a nice walk down memory lane

Holy shit, those stratos, pity it's on the other side of the content I would take those in a heart beat. The longer Volkls as well.

I love that they're mounted up w/M48(?)s from ~1995 -> Also like the Heads w/the non-turntable Rotamats in the same picture. Most should probably be posted in the "mount your own skis" thread!

Thanks for sharing, OP, and for trying to find a good home for this collection. Really cool stuff. Count me as one of the West coasters that's bummed it's so far away -> happily pay for shipping some out here if it comes to it, but I'm guessing there's plenty of takers nearby.

I'm in Central VT and would happily take all of this. Can I pick it up tomorrow? Seriously.

Oh yes please...I would happily pay to get all that here out West. Working on opening a museum across the road from our oldest ski area here in Oregon and there are at least a few pieces that would be perfect if not all of it. Please let me know if this is still available BigDaddy so we can chat. Think Snow and protect our history!

Glad to see you guys appreciating his collection. He's probably the must humble guy, and I hate to see him giving this up. I'm going to take the wooden skis and mount them high on the wall of my cabin. I know this may make it less desirable, but out of his collection, they are probably the only skis that I didn't own, lol. And they will serve as a great memento of our friendship and his legacy.

    Fritz with his collection:

He told me about the red Toni Sailer's and how they were the hot ski in their day, but they were impossible to turn. He said Howard Head came to their patrol shack and pitched his metal skis. (He said they all then bought Harts and loved them.) He said they all scoffed at the idea and could not imagine how a metal ski could possibly work or not bend.

His family escaped Austria via Canada and then to NYC. Fritz played water polo for the New York Athletic Club, but because he was Jewish, he could not use the locker room or showers. He built his own Vermont ski house, then moved there full time in the 70's with his wife, who he had met when he rescued her while patrolling at MRG. Like I said, he still gets out on good days and as you can see, still has a full head of hair, lol.

His first skis, now mounted in my cabin:
