I don't know a single person that I've talked to in real life that likes that trail. Only people on the internet who want to seem tough.

Good thread here. Getting to Fruita this afternoon and camping. Maybe spending 2 nights.

Specific 18 road trails for my super noob GF?

No cover at all camping at 18 road? Next closest option?

    Thanks

Noob girlfriend would probably not enjoy zippety or joe's if she doesn't feel confident with a little exposure. Kessel Run is probably the most beginner-friendly.

Start out with a ride up Prime cut or the road, and down PBR. There is no way that anyone dislikes that trail as a warmup. If she's feeling good after that, ride Joe's but turn off before Mo-Joe's. Also Kessel is good.

For a little shade maybe head up into the canyon just west of 18rd. Never done it but I've seen some sites up in there that look ok. Not as close to riding though, unless you want ride the Edge loop but that ride kinda sucks Sarlac is supposed to be cool though. With a capable vehicle you could get on top of the mesa and camp.

Word. Driving a wagon on low profile wheels. Already beat the crap out of it driving back roads in NM.

I like Moore Fun, but then again, I don't like 18 road trails (boring), so I'm definitely in the minority.

18 Road was fun. Wayyy buff, but that was a nice change of pace.

Got the GF on Kessel in the afternoon yesterday. Considering she hasn't really ridden a bike in 15 years let alone any actual trails she did pretty good.

I did zippity, joes, mojoes, and PBR this morning. Smoother than the greens on bike parks in NJ and PA lol. Would definitely ride again though. Nice not riding rock gardens for hours and hours sometimes.

It's actually more fun than Moore Fun, which isn't saying much.

    Bump.

Long shot: Wondering if anyone might have a campsite in Fruita reserved this weekend that they’re not going to use.

You may already know this, but there are a bunch of spots that open for reservation 4 days in advance. Looks like there are still a few with Friday availability (Sat not released until tomorrow AM).

Also some nice disbursed camp sites off coal gulch rd, past the cattle guard on the right (part of the edge loop). connects to the 18 rd network easily.

WTF?! That might be my favorite trail in the whole world. Yes, it's a bitch to climb but what an amazing jank-filled DH reward.

I think you hang out with the wrong crowd. While I appreciate the reference to being tough, I'm 62 and my toughest days are far behind, but I truly LOVE that trail. The stuff at Lunch Loops; Gunny, Holy Cross, Free Lunch, Pre Nup were all amazing but Moore Fun was definitely the highlight of the week. Added bonus is starting that ride with the Horsethief Drop down and back. (Yes, the climb out sucks)
I'd drive the 8hrs to ride that trail alone.

I've only rode Moore Fun once, and I was told (maybe here) that I'd love it or hate it. I thought it was decent? We ride a lot of janky tech around here, and I've learned to embrace it.

I contend that if you don't like that trail that you might not actually like mountain biking at all and might want to consider taking up another hobby... like knitting.

Maybe that's the key. Northern NM is all janky tech. Moore Fun is extremely well built janky tech.
I don't understand how you can like Lunch Loops and not Moore Fun, though.
IMO, it's just a higher level of the same style.

You have to ride Moore Fun the right way....East to West. Great techy climbing. Almost every feature is rideable by itself but back to back to back is what makes it tough. I have heard it called "Moore Walking" by more than a few people.

Lunch Loops always kicks my ass, but its definitely fun. I have friends here that don't even like riding "flow" trails. Personally, I like it all.

Moore fun is in the same class as Ahab, imo. Not sure how you like one but hate the other. That said, I never got along with lunch loops. Been about 10 years, maybe I should try it again?

Last fall I spent 10 days in dispersed camping right off the 18 Road Trailhead.
    No reservation needed and free.
