Reno-Tahoe bachelor party
Am guessing expert guidance on this is unnecessary, but I haven't been to Reno-Tahoe for a number of years, except once simply on the way to Mammoth. For this type of undertaking, what should I know? It should be in Feb/March, and I know that some of the non-skiers (I assume we will force them to ski) are expecting to stay in Reno itself, which is something I've never done before (would staying at Heavenly make sense?).
You are all invited, naturally.[quote][//quote]

Stay in South Tahoe, there's a gondola that comes down to Hwy 50. From there, it's a 3-4 minute walk across the border to the casinos.

Stay in SLT, never have to drive, all the food, booze and bars are within a 5 minute walk and the heavenly gondola picks you up right next to harrahs. Strippers that make house/hotel calls are always more fun than in the ones in the club. the closest legal weed is up in Incline village.
its just as cheap to stay in SLT at one of the casinos as it is to stay in reno, so why the fuck would you stay in reno. Also, flights into Sacramento are generally much cheaper than reno, though you would have to rent a car (also much cheaper in sac than reno), but that car would allow the good skiers to pick which resort they want to ski that day while those without a car could only ski heavenly.

Don't stay in Reno.

SLT sounds like it might be the way to go.
However, if Reno is still a consideration:
Whitney Peak Hotel.
Smack dab in the middle of town. My buddy, who works for Tesla, stays there on his regular trips to the BLC and says it's legit.
Mid-Town.
This area is super cool and has arguably the best bars in the city, if you like good beer, that is.
1. Reno Public House
2. Craft
3. Pinon
4. Death and Taxes (craft cocktail and whisky joint)
5. Brasserie St. James
6. Chapel
There is also the Wild Orchid Hotel and "Gentleman's Club", which is on the northern outskirts of Mid-Town.
And there's always Circus Circus. I mean they have free circus shows daily.
PS
whilst flying into Sacramento may be cheaper, you'll have an hour-and-a-half-plus drive with all the Bay Area tourists (i.e. traffic galore/gridlock if the weather is inclimate). Drive from Reno to Lake Tahoe is about 45-minutes and tends to be less traffic/gridlock/tourists who don't know how to drive in inclimate weather).

Stay in South Lake.
I went last winter with my friends and we all pitched in and got a 4k sqft vacation rental in South Lake. It worked out to 120 per night for 7 nights for 8 people. Or you could stay in the hotels or casinos in South Lake. The Marriott is nice and the gondola picks you up right at the hotel.

Yeah, we have decided SLT makes sense (fortunately the other two guys helping plan are also skiers, so Reno was quickly ruled out). The non-skiers will just have to deal with it.

DD is always looking for someone to pay his way out west. Pay his way and have him be your personal bell hop for the party.

Stay in South Lake. Fly into Reno, rent a car there -- it's cheap. (Casino towns like Reno and Vegas have lots of car rentals. Sacramento won't compare.) The new freeway extension of 580/395 through Carson City recently opened, so you have a fast freeway drive from the airport south on 580/395, to the junction of 50 (south of Carson City). There is a Costco very close to that interchange, if you want to load up on shopping on the way. Then take 50 up to South Lake (4 lanes, divided road, for much of the way).
I live on the outskirts of Reno, up Mt Rose hwy, and drive to downtown for work. Downtown, including the "up and coming" midtown area, is a shithole. I never come down here except for work.
Stay in South Lake Tahoe, there's plenty of non-skiing scenic touristing and walking-around to do. Heavenly is right there. If you want to go to Kirkwood, rent a 4WD/AWD car. If you want to go to Squaw/Alpine/Northstar, you're at the opposite end of the lake, and expect a long slow drive to get there.

I just did this last weekend and flew into sac, because both the flight and car rental were much cheaper than Reno FWIW. Also, the taquerias in sac easily validated the extra 30 mins spent on the road to SLT.
Also, for a bachelor party i dont think the added cost for a 4WD/AWD car is worth it unless the groom is an avid skier. You will probably want to spend the trip as a group, instead of splitting up for 10 hours each day. IMO, but you gotta look at what the trip is for and make decisions based on that, not on what YOU want, ya know? Once you are in SLT, you will not need to ever drive until the trip back to the airport if you just ski at heavenly (which is a big ass mountain).

You may very well need AWD, 4WD, or chains to get to SLT from Sac, and rental agencies generally don't allow chains. Consider the cost of AWD when deciding which airport to fly into--I would guess they are more common to rent in Reno, but I don't know. Also, there is a shuttle from Reno to SLT, but that would leave you without a car in SLT, which would be fine unless you want to ski other than Heavenly. For that you would need AWD.

Yeah, I have done this before and had to go over Donner in the middle of the night during a blizzard in a shitty Chrysler rental car--have done the drive from Reno as well and appreciate that it is easier. I got chains, made it over, rolled into SLT at about 4:30 and hit KW for first chair...groom is a competent skier, his brother is a pretty hard core A Basin local, so decisions during the day will be made based on skiing (that's my assumption, and if the snow is good then the 'no friends' axiom will apply). The rest of the group will have to figure shit out on their own (I think the majority like to ski, and I'm not anticipating bitchiness).

Sounds like you've got the stay in SLT part. We did one in SLT a few years ago and rented a huge place off Pioneer Trail on VRBO. Slept 15-16. Indoor pool and sauna. Grill on the deck. Cinema room with projector and theater seating. Etc. So there's that question too: whether you do something like that or stay at the base of the gondola/casinos. Pros and cons to each.
Our event was on a hot Memorial Day weekend, so we spent a good amount of time on the beach at Zephyr Cove. Ended up bringing two chicks from Sac back to our house who, it turned out, were strippers at the Centerfolds in Rancho Cordova (no joke). Groom ended up doing body shots off their tits in the hot tub. They were looking for a free place to crash for the night, so it was a fair trade.

Good pho place right near the Whitney Peak. Not that I'm recommending staying in Reno.
If you rent an expensive place make sure all the appliances match. There's some shady shit going on these days.

Get out of Reno asap. Do it in SLT. Reno is a shit hole. Jim Jeffries agrees.

On the other hand(y), Reno is always good for an angry rub/tug from a 3d shift cocktail waitress

I'm a snobby SF dude but I think Reno has a cool vibe, granted from the several hours I've spent there. I've come to love SLT from all the reasons mentioned above, but...I wouldn't call it charming. If you took out all the skiing and outdoors opportunities I guess I'd rather hang out in Reno.

A lot of our friends like Reno--Costco, slot machines, buffets--you get the picture.

...and there is legal recreational pot in NV...
I guess SLT is gonna be more expensive, and "touristy".
But that'd only matter if bachelor party was on the cheap.
Assume it is no-expense-spared, rather than discount version?
