Rome
Lodging and food.
I'm prepared to spend two days in the Vatican art collection, and I definitely want to do the catacombs, but, what else?

Carry cash and passport in your back pocket to avoid aggressive groping from strangers.
Scientists now have decisive molecular evidence that humans and chimpanzees once had a common momma and that this lineage had previously split from monkeys.

Awaiting Benny's take on the Vatican once he sees the line to get in.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

http://travel.usnews.com/Rome_Italy/Things_To_Do/ All of these are worth visiting . . . no lines at The Vatican if you purchase the right ticket If you have an extra day, take the train to the Pope's summer quarters on Lake Albano - the beach is beautiful (well, was)! Just saw you can also tour the residence.

Rome
There's a reasonable AirBnB rental on the Via Margutta (near the Spanish Steps and Gregory Peck's place in Roman Holiday).
Go see a soccer match
Go to an enoteca and meet some people. Party with same.
Do the passeggiata on the Corso
Why would you spend two days in Vatican museums? Get the right tickets and take 2 hours to see Rafaele Stanze ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raphael_Rooms ) and Sistine Chapel and the Laocoon ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laocoön_and_His_Sons )Last edited by 54-46; 08-12-2017 at 06:58 AM.

Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II - short walk to the Ruins from there
Roman Forum
Colosseum this is a must do over most monuments
Pantheon
Fontana Trevi is impressive
Finally don't forget to hang around the Piazza de Spagna for a bit before going for dinner. Btw the shops at the to of the steps are a great place to walk around. Found some nice shops without tourist prices.
There are soo many museums and galleries but 2 days isn't enough
Buon Viagio

Do some studying about the history of Rome. It puts all of the ruins in a little more context.
Eat at least a few blocks from any major tourist stop. Order cacio e pepe
Make a reservation for the Borghese museum and spend most of your time looking at the Bernini's
Be careful crossing the roads, the cars come at you faster than the top station

Wear cargo pants with lots of pockets. The cold cuts are awesome there. The pickpockets will completely freak out when try to grab your wallet and end up with a fistful of coppa.
Btw. Isn't the interwebz full of travel tips for just about any area in the world? I bet you could even find travel tips for Larsen ice shelf. Or is this just your way of letting us all know you are going to Rome?"timberridge is terminally vapid" -- a fortune cookie in Yueyang

Actually, this has been an excellent source of travel tips over the years. I'm asking a fairly hip cross section of the 1%, after all.
And, yes, I am going to Rome. Nana nana. After spending a month in the north. Nana nana.

Read the "learning Spanish " thread for tips on foreign languages. Working on a Detroit cement crew should help with Italian.

Oh, no, like I said, November.
Great time to be a tourist. No lines. Well, minimal.

Rome
This is probably quite obvious but Rome is a walking city with many charming places you will only find by walking around and exploring. I would spend at least a couple hours just walking around and "getting lost". There are many charming alleys and streets that are off the beaten path. Rome is much like Paris in that regard.
Obviously the Trevi fountain, the Spanish steps, etc
Are you going to Firenze? Stop at Assisi on the way if you are

The Roma/Lazio derby is 11/19. That would be insane!
