Travel advice: Prague>Split>Budapest
*Travel details edited: Starting to work on some details for a trip late October. Flying into Split on the 23rd and out of Budapest Nov. 5th, so we have about 2 weeks to make our way by rental car. Rough plan is to drive around Croatia and then back north to Hungary. Some things that we've identified to see along the way to give a rough idea of the route so far: Dubrovnik, Split, Plitvice Lakes. What else is in that area that we should see, any must do hikes that time of year or general advice about the stops so far? Any insight appreciated.
What about the car situation, anything I need to be aware of? Are the travel times given on Google maps fairly accurate for eastern Europe? I know that in Central America travel times were 50-100% too low due to road conditions and a planned 4 hour day was double that.
Disclaimer: I know that I could spend a week in any one of those locations, but past travel experience tends to tell me that I get bored easily and start to want to move. This is especially true in big cities, I know there is lots to see in Prague and Budapest but I probably won't be in either for more than two days. Maybe when I'm older I will have identified places where I want to go back and really experience a given location, but this isn't the trip.Last edited by zion zig zag; 07-21-2017 at 10:39 AM. You might want to use Salzburg base as and do a day trip to Halstatt/Berchtesgaden.

If you go to Split and you have the time, check out the island of Hvar. It's a short ferry trip and a little more relaxed.

"I get bored easily and start to want to move." Totally understand this concept, but both Budapest and Prague will be totally different places when you decide to return . . . I'd allow at least three days each - jmho!!!

Ok, so after some deep soul searching and the realization that I was viewing this trip as an Austria/Slovenia heavy plan, and my wife's expectation was Croatia heavy, I changed agendas a bit. Now flying into Split and will have two weeks till we fly out of Budapest. This will cut the driving in half and give us a little more time to explore.

The food. The food. The food. In Budapest, anything goose liver based is fantastic. There are some Pilsner Urquel bars that serve amazing chicken soup, it has half of the damn chicken in the bowl. If you see any 90's American cars, chances are I sent them there, that was my job in the mid 90's, I exported US cars to Hungary.
Click. Point. Chute.

Anyone have thoughts on Mostar as a day trip from Dubrovnik? Is it worth the drive?

Check my recently-bumped Croatia TR for a little bit of info.
I personally would get out of Split pretty quickly, unless you're planning on using it as a base to do a few day trips. I'd recommend going down to Dubrovnik and then exploring a couple of the islands like Brac and Hvar. They're spectacular. Split is cool, but a day is more than enough for me.

I bumped that in my quest for info. Great photos and cool looking spots. Yeah, I'm not sure we'll even spend the night in Split. We fly in fairly early so we may just check out Diocletian's palace and then *split*. Omis just down the road looks bad ass and has lots of outdoor activities (zipline, canyoning, etc.).

My favorite island was Brac, by far... but I was there in October when it was super quiet.
