Summer Solstice 2017 - Illumination Rock
Mt Hood, Illumination Rock above Timberline Lodge
Every year for the past few years, skiers have been getting together to celebrate the summer solstice: the day when days stop getting longer and the slide to winter can only accelerate. This was my first attendance -- I think I'll be going back next year.
the approach never seems snowy enough
you have to walk up to get there
i cheated and rode to the top of the Palmer lift, then skinned from there (it's +/-3,200 vert to get there; i skinned maybe 1,000 vert)
but even doing that, i felt like a slacker cuz people were dragging all sorts of stuff up
there was music
there were grills
there was grilled meats, beer, booze, weed, pool toys, drones, tents, a baker's snow cave & a ramp
it's pretty up there
Indiana Jones showed up and cracked his whip
Superman showed up
this is a step back look at the party zone - I counted more than 70 people at one point during the evening
being above the cloud deck with the clouds sliding by was pretty cool
a ramp was built & there was a session with pyrotechnic accompaniments
this dude, Javi, was fun to watch
this guy is manufacturing snow scooters, first run comes out this fall

sometimes you crater
sometimes you break both skis when you crater
people were flying
is it a ski party if there are no snow blades?
spread eagle crotch grab snow blade guy says "nah-ah"
he's modest about being the mayor of this event, but this guy Asit (w/ the jameson) and his crew are some good energy on Hood
almost 9.24pm...the slide to winter is starting...the sunset was worth it
winter is coming
here ends the reading

Love the shots with the skiers above the clouds.
My favorite day of the year too. Although it still will be dam hot for a few months; you know every day, winter is getting closer and at an increasing rate.TGR forums cannot handle SkiCougar !

Better looking snow than I rode yesterday, too. That's for sure...

Hell ya! That's for sharing, always an event I've wanted to attend. Looks like a rad time. One year I'll make it up there for it!
I think that snow blade guy is a former mag but i could be mistaken And I'm looking forward to seeing how Asit's project pans out!

I was just hearing about this annual craziness yesterday. Sounded like a good time, and this is proof.
I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...iscariot

Timely thread. I thought I couldn't be the only person excited when the weather man announced that today would be 1 second shorter of daylight then yesterday. I try every year to get excited about summer. It seems like everyone around me is always pumped for long hot days. Even in my 40's now I don't get it. I skied in April, closing week and weekend at Deer Valley. Don't laugh, had soli free tickets to burn and kids had springs break, so it was free. Anyway, I was thinking its been 2 months too long for me.
That TR looked awesome. Thanks for sharing.

FKNA AC, glad you got a piece of that magic. My schedule got crazy this month. I can only say this a hand full of times: I'm glad I didn't ski... More details soon, but I think I may have a new home resort in a year or two.... Dry fkn powder? Here I come...

You might be correct Brutah, but only kind of. Wish we could have hooked up AC. Let's get a tour day whenever you get a chance.
