    Am I screwed?

A buddy of mine was helping me swap out a wheelset and got a little too aggressive mounting the tire. The tire iron got caught in the spoke hole and tore the aluminum. Am I screwed and need a new wheel, or should it be fine? I'm leaning toward just using it since it's in the same area as all of the spoke holes anyway.

I did something similar to a rim many years ago. Still riding it to this day. Put some rim tape over it and forget it ever happened.

How does a tire lever get into a bolt hole? Looks more like someone was using a small screwdriver?

might be fine, for lighter rider, shorter term.

I would use it, and just moniter the damage.

Yeah, stupid I know. I was using the plastics on the other wheel and we got impatient.

I'm thinking I'll just tape it up and play it by ear after a few rides.

Mark that spoke with a little red paint, or some tape. Ride it, and constantly monitor the wheel for signs of it letting go. It should start to get out of true before it catastrophically fails.
Looks like a front wheel, how nice are your teeth? Post a photo of your smile and we can determine if they are in need an upgrade soon as well?

You used a tire iron to install a tire? WTF?

It should work if you can cover it sufficiently and keep an eye on it.

I see you've never installed tight tires.

I've installed thousands of tight tires, never using an iron (although watched plenty of shop rookies doing it). I was a shop rat for 6 years, been in and out of the industry for 45 years. The key is to get the entire bead down into the rim well. Just 'cuz you can't do it doesn't mean it can't be done.

I've seen a lot of shop rats brag about their technique and strong hands, only to be humbled by a moderately tight downhill tire.

The tire the guy is removing in that video you linked is insanely loose. A half dead leper who had finger specific rickets could install that thing without levers.

So yeah, I don't think you've actually installed legitimately tight tires.

I've used tire levers plenty of times for that last little bit of getting the bead over the edge of the rim. Plastic levers, always....

i don't even remember there being real tire irons so as a kid I put lots of holes in tubes using screwdrivers but nothing like ripping an aluminium rim ... that there takes some mad skills eh?

I think most of the strength come from the arch on the inner side of the rim and the side walls, that just makes a really big spoke hole ... I think you could ride it like that

I swear the circumference is different on tires. I had a tire several yrs ago that was a complete bitch to install. I used my old motocross iron levers to install...very carefully. I went out and bought another set of plastic levers so I could use 3 or 4 for the next time. I've never had a tire since that was such a pia and I hope I never do.

Are there people that can hand seat a Maxxis Minion DH casing wire bead? Impressive if so. Fuckers are tight as hell.

I actually thought this was one of the biggest downsides to carbon rims. I had a set of Nextie rims that was so tight with Butchers I thought I was going to crack the rim sidewall while getting the tire off.

There were some Wolber 700c rims in the 80's I couldn't put any tires on by hand. They came on a mid level Schwinn road bike. Some tires wouldn't even seat on the rims fully inflated w soap on the bead. Those were the only ones I couldn't get on.

Still convinced they made the rims slightly to large.

The worst were Trek Matrix rims in the mid 90's (besides DH tires).

I couldn't remember the name. Yes wolbers. They came on rocky's in the 90's. Crazy hard to get some tires on/off those

Put Nobby Nics on a new pair of Spank Oozys last night.

Holy crap that oh so clever "bump in the middle of the rim that makes our wheels light but strong" make getting tires on a bitch.

I hope I don't ever have to go un-tubeless with them on a ride.
