-Meet the dog, play with the dog, take the dog for a walk and see if she/he is a personality fit.
-If dog passes above test, have GF rub her face on the dog.
-Put the dog on hold, take small fur sample from said dog.
-See if GF has allergic freakout to dog from rubbing face on dog.
-If no, rub fur sample on GF's pillow and see if she has a reaction.
-If no, go back and adopt dog.

We went through various stages of that test with a couple dogs before finding an awesome fit. It was worth it.

Edit to add- our dog had serious separation anxiety when we first got her. We crate trained her, which felt really bad at first. She would bark in her kennel and get really upset when we left, but eventually she would chill out. The kennel became her safe spot and now she chills in there all time but it has been years since we have shut the door for any reason. She is an Australian Kelpie, and despite all the common knowledge to the contrary she is the chillest indoor dog I have ever known. She can go on 8+ mile trail runs one day and chill wihout any excercise other days.

We've got what I think is a Kelpie / ACD / Border Collie mix. Very similar temperament in his ability to go long distance or chill. Never a lazy dog around the house, but not the kinda bat-shit crazy I was lead to believe..

Something about Kelpies I guess. She's the best dog I could ask for. She's smart, adventurous, great at backcountry skiing and trail running, loves to scramble in the mountains and really affectionate as well.

    The girl in question-

    Backcountry skiing-

    Chilling at home-

She is truly my best friend.

She's from a shelter in rural Oklahoma and won a lottery to be brought to CO and put up for adoption at our local humane society. It's heartbreaking to think that a dog this sweet would be put down without having won that lottery. Definitely adopt if you can.

That brought a tear to my eyes. You're a good man.
It has never ceased to amaze me what great dogs are found at the pound with a little patience.

so, to all of you who helped and made me laugh and whatnot:

Beagle is definitely stoked, in a good place with good people.

We found a hypoallergenic maltese/poodle dog at a pound a few hrs away. He's a champ, having come through some t-storms and the 4th of July in a new home with few complications.
In a week he's gone from not knowing about walking on a leash, or going up and down a stairway, and being super duper sensitive to noises and everything....to learning all of that and being very comfortable and relaxed.

    I love this little fella:

Nice action. Seems like there might be a small shedding issue though.

I had no use for little white dogs until we got one. I've changed my mind.
Good luck keeping her white in a UP winter. Our cockapoo attracts dirt like a magnet and it's definitely the poodle in her; our cocker sheds dirt like Teflon.

Get a Husky ! They shed everywhere, probably horrible for allergies. They are high maintenance , need to be ran daily.
They tear shit up If bored.

But- They look and are cool dogs.
You can travel in the backcountry with them. They don't bark, but do have a cool howl
    Chicks will dig you

( Ok OK. its my favorite breed. Just don't want you to have to walk a sissy dog around your hood.)

Big truck, big dog, small dick.
Neighbor of mine has rescue chihuahuas. Her husband was out the other day walking two of them--in tutus (the dogs, not the husband.) Now there is a man confidant in his masculinity.

either that or a man who is completely and utterly whipped.

Penis Shaming!! Have some compassion. Doesn't bother me though, I'm in denial. For the record, when my Mastiff died I did seem to gain an inch or so, so you may be onto something there.

Cute dog IAD, glad that all worked out. Tough situation.
