Matt’s friend Kenny from Missoula happened to be in Svalbard kicking it with his brother for a few days, and decided to come check out the flat light madness in Lyngen for a couple days. It was rad having another fresh face in the group. We decided to go check out some North facing mini knuckle called Rundfjellnasen that seemed like it would be under the cloud deck. It held a couple 6-800 ft lines, and would be super straight forward- as long as we could see.

As we headed up the broad ridge to the top, we heard bells, and noticed (a pack?) of reindeer hanging out in the abyss on top of the hill! Pretty sweet. It socked in pretty bad as we were switching over, and considered just skiing the ridge back down. We had ourselves an extended snack break and eventually, it lifted enough to ski.

Figured I’d get into something with a little more excitement.

It was like skiing on vanilla cake icing, if you’ve ever been on that kind of acid trip whilst in the backcountry. We went back to the house for lunch and a little remotivation. Russelvfjellet is the Northernmost large peak in Lyngen, and it just happened to be looming out the kitchen window. I was able to talk Matt into trying to ski one of the chutes on the SW side. The skies were breaking a little bit, may as well go check it out.

Good booting until we got into the chute proper, then it was pretty obvious it had all sluffed to firm as fuck. We kept going thinking we’d turn a corner and get above it. Nah, didn’t happen. Prolly should’ve brought my helmet and ice axe… We skied it from a little bit above the Y. It was really loud, firm skiing until we got out of the chute. FUN!

Had a hell of a night kicking it on the shore drinking whiskey and watching the waves. Got a real nice late start. Headed back to Russelvfjellet up one of the lower angle approaches, it would probably be a little more friendly. Still grey as fuck, no new snow, but a SHITTON of WIND.

The top 400 feet or so it was easily blowing 40mph straight up the hill. It helped us out on the way up, pretty gnarly switching over and trying to ski down. We had a hard time skiing over to the top of the line because on this day, Gravity< Wind. Pretty hilarious. Once on steeper snow, it went from warm chalk to nice and creamy. There is so much potential in the S and W facing chutes on Russelvfjellet if you can hit it right.

Packed up from Nord Lenangen and headed to the other side of the North Peninsula. Grey skies, low clouds, and afternoon showers was the theme again . We were going to stop somewhere on the way and shred, but the cloud deck was so low, you couldn’t make out any real features from the road. Made it to the trailhead for Fastdalshytta, just south of Koppangen, and started walking the 2 miles to the cabin. I forgot some things at the car, so jetted back to get them. It started raining for real on my way back. I eventually made it to the cabin soaked to the bone with epically low stoke. There were some Frenchies already there and they didn’t want to give up any real estate near the stove for drying. Matt motivated for a rip up Rundfjellet just to the South. I followed for a little bit, said fuck it, and went back to the cabin to drink wine and listen to the frenchies argue about who know what. Matt came back an hour or so later, soaked, but stoked he got out there.

Woke to a couple inches of new snow and moderate wind. Went to take a dump. As I was walking to the outhouse, saw some trash…? Got to the shitter, opened the door, and it was OVERFLOWING with poop! Who ever took the last dump in that thing really went for it! Anyway, we headed North from the cabin to ski some little chutes on Goalborri. It was blown off and rock hard booting up the apron, actually blue-tinted snow….. As we got into the chute, things got better with a couple inches of wind buff. Click image for larger version.

Levitating above some of that Norwegian Blue Pow.

Did a one and done then headed to Tromso for a little culture I guess. Got there just after 6 and missed the window for buying beer. Checked into the Hostel and went out on the town. Bla Rock café was cool, kinda a punk rock bar. Douchie bar tender, but good customers. The Bastard bar was the shit, a basement bar that hosted a Norwegian hardcore concert. I still didn’t know what the music would be like as everyone started getting earplugs from the bar. The show was rad! So metal! I don’t even listen to that shit, and I had a great time.

Woke to a couple inches of new snow in Tromso and partially clearing. There's a gondola just east of town, we decided to take our skis. Skied 1000 ft of dust on crust back to the bottom. I thought it was pretty good actually. Matt may have lost an edge and butt slid into some willows. He wanted to go for a tour little further up the drainage towards Tromstinden. We skinned for a little bit, realizing that the trail was going to be uphill both ways. I decided to just go ahead and go in the UP direction and turned off the trail. Got about 800ft through moderately steep birch trees before hitting a plateau. It was pretty nice, the snow was settled and moist underneath.

At first glance, you probably don’t want to go in here, because it’s obviously a collapsing building. It’s the Arctic Museum, which undoubtedly holds some sweet exhibits. I didn’t want to pay, and although I walked right by the front desk like I owned the place, they followed me in and asked me for my ticket. No amount of “Hei, Hei’s” could get me in for free.

Found the coolest urinal in Norway, it’s upstairs at Yonas Pizza! It’s a waterfall! I swear they have it all figured out over there. Actually, for the most part, urinals are crazy tall in Norway, good luck if you’re a 5’5” dude.

“Of course I’m staying here, 4th floor, room 20.”

Super friendly airline agents let us check our heavy ass bags for free. There was a glitch in their system that didn’t recognize our passports for about 20 minutes. “You live in the United States?” “Uh, yea…..” Thought for a second we’d get at least another few weeks of vacation while they figured it out. Hey, a guy can fantasize.
It all went well after that, even saw the French guy whose pole I fixed the couple days before.

Tons of movies, tv shows, and Iceland propaganda videos later, we were in the Seattle airport, eating fried food, drinking heady beers, and watching the sunset.
Caught the last Alaska flight into Bozeman. No one was on the plane, free beer and leg room!

Man, after checking out parts 1-3 of your kick ass TR and poring over every picture, I declare this the finest stoke I have seen in at least the last two hours.

Thank you for putting together this amusing series. I really need to get over there.
