By most accounts the Mk7 Golf is better built than previous generations and they are quite reliable. For a VW. So, yeah.

I just got a 2015 TDI wagon. Fit and finish is impressive, it drives very well and has a remarkable amount of space for its footprint. As long as you don't load them up the TSI golfs are reasonably priced.

I have an OB, if I was in the market for that type of car I'd be looking at the Volvo V60XC or if smaller is the thing wait for the new V40 that will be out later this year. The new OB's just strike me as bloated.

mrs acinpdx got a golf wagon tsi (not awd)
nice ride overall, some nicer features like rain sensor windshield & heated seats
i actually fit in it (6-5) with the seat down all the way...back seat only if a small person is riding in the front. Don't expect to carry your aged parents around in the back seats with you riding in the front unless you are all tiny. car seats should be fine fitting in there.

    odd decisions in some places:
front seat mechanics: seat back is auto, lift is manual
side windows at trunk: almost useless
side windows forward of mirrors : almost useless
trunk space: fine for groceries, tight for two 50# dogs [not sure why they keep reducing the size of the wagon available in the states: passat->jetta->golf]

For mainly bouncing around town really look at these new hybrids and electrics. They do drive great in those scenarios. Snow tires on anything fwd if serviceable in most driving conditions.

If you're considering the Outback as an around-town AWD commuter you should take a look at the Forester. They're between 3k and 5k cheaper, same engine, same AWD, a bit shorter, same clearance, plenty of room. Outbacks are cows with 2.5 engine, Foresters are slightly more lively.
Cue the munching box comments though...

Sounds like, as per TGR tradition, you've come here for validation of a decision you've already made rather than input.

So PM iceman and get a Praxis RX and call it good.

Well, probably you get invited to all the local lesbian events as part of the ownership package.

Just checked the consumer reports.org car buying service, and they allege about 10% off available through them, and not having to deal with a dealer.

If you're OK with boxy, ugly, incredibly functional and it's going to be used for hauling kids to and fro, then just get a minivan. They're awesome kid carriers. Sure they're ugly and uncool but they are incredibly convenient and versatile automobiles. Most of my siblings now drive these soul sucking rigs down the road and they love them. They have a Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey and a Dodge Caravan respectively. They all love the convenience that the minivan brings to their daily lives.

    Another New Car Thread

Look at all the competitors, you may be surprised, (even the Kia version is faster), and then look at slightly used models in the same category that are list priced for more money, (Q5, X-1, etc.), it is a small SUV after all.
I rented an Outback last summer and HATED that cvt.

You're much more likely to bang the nanny in the back of a Cayenne, X5 or Q7

Ugh, I was looking at cars recently for a sister and was disappointed in how many come with these God-awful CVTs.

For fucks sake the once-proud Nissan Pathfinder is now a front wheel drive minivan alternative complete with a shitbox CVT.

    What the fuck?!?!

    It is truly saintly work.

Now, since Rontele already had his mind made up and just wanted to tell us that he's buying the nanny a shaggin-wagon, can we get back to the important matters at hand?

Purposefully open ended question on my part. You've identified one thing more important now that the nanny-shaggin-wagon question has been answered.
