    ha, hardly ^^^

like a lot of words, "Upstate" has multiple meanings. You go to Malone, or Lake Placid or Lake George and ask 'em if Poughkeepsie is upstate and you'll get a different answer than yours.

^^^^ That map matches my Upstate NY territory when I was a peddler. But my map was drawn by a guy on 7th Ave. so there's that.

Dannemora and Malone are very squarely in the North Country.

As North Country towns go, though, I'm partial to Churubusco, home of Dick's Country Store & Music Oasis: gas, groceries, guns, and guitars.

Everything north of Westchester is upstate. Whatever additional regional designations might apply, (Western, CNY, Hudson Valley, Northern tier etc...) its all upstate.

Edit: just checked wiki, that map includes Orange, Putnam, and Dutchess Counties. Those are most certainly upstate. As someone from the city, I couldn't have named them or their location, which makes them "upstate". Other than Westchester, Rockland is the only one that could maybe -- maybe -- escape the designation, but only because it's an anomaly, being on the Jersey side of the Hudson.
    Right.
Most people that live in Rockland either work in or have some connection to the city. It’s a suburb of NYC for sure but people who live in the city usually have no idea what I’m talking about when I explain where I live. Lots of them ask if it’s in Jersey.

I'll concede anything west of 91 in MA as upstate NY too.

So this is where I ran into someone who agreed that Poughkeepsie was not upstate, but for a different reason. To them, up state was Catskills and South of Dutchess county to NYC, and stopped north and west of there. And that all of the other named regions were exactly that, named regions. So where would this person have gotten that idea?? That the named regions could not be 'Upstate' because they are named regions? Person was from the Bronx. Too much crack? Seriously, this is driving me nuts.

So, in a similar vein, anything south/west of I-89 in VT really isn't part of VT. It's a mix of NH, NY, and Dog forbid, MA. You may think that west of 91 is 'Upstate' NY, but the southern tier portions of VT East of VT-100 and south of 89 are definitely MA-lite, with a NH influence. North of 89 and east of 91 feels like NH. Essex County, with parts of Orleans.

Millions showed how virtuous they are by standing up for a made up person in a commercial for a bike that can’t take you anywhere.

    It was a glorious week.
