    Hey Montucky just saw this where the tech shows how to make a tool for helping with the C30 strut removal around the 2:00 mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-swy5KB-DM. I would be the dummy pounding away and probably hitting a finger with a hammer in the process.

    Nice!!! Thanks for the video tutorial. That looks WAAAAAY easier than the P3's I've been dealing with (my XC70 and now my S60). Provided nuts and bolts aren't rusted all to hell on my C30 that is. Your video gives me confidence to tackle the job, though. Not that I'd outsource it, but still. Makes me feel better about it. Will report back when I get around to it. Meanwhile in S60 Land, I'm now just waiting on my new control arms before I can proceed. I think I have the rest of the parts.

    It's a 128i. I wanted nothing to do with turbos and direct injection and hp fuel pumps etc...

    Just a basic, rwd, stick shift, naturally aspirated inline 6. The classic formula for bmw success.
    Going to pick up the mounted up tires right.... now.

    I went a little conservative on fitment. Had to make sure they fit. This car takes funky offsets. So setup is square 17x8 et40 with225/45/17 Firestone Indy 500 rubber. I've used these tires before and liked them.

    Thanks man, 3 weeks of sitting on the sitter at work researching wheels and tires will do that. JK.
    Getting a 17" square setup that doesn't require fender rolling and spacers and camber plates, and all other general wheel fitment shenanigans leads you to this setup. It's a relief after you pull the trigger and the stuff actually fits like you are hoping.

    Not a big fender rollin guy. I've seen some that look great, and some that look not so great. Just not something I've really messed with.

    Subframe bushings on the other hand....

    How are those Indy 500's on flinging up gravel? TR says TW are 340 so I'm wondering if they're less prone to it than the 200 tires.

    Yeah, haven't done too much driving on them yet. But they do throw noticeably more crap at the side of the car. I'm sure they are less prone to it than a Kumho rs4 or an azeni.
    I've had these tires before and really liked them on a couple of different cars.

    The wife's 2012 Rav4 has a crack on the rear subframe. Mechanic says the whole thing needs replaced. Its probably from a pothole or something since there is no rust on the car to speak of. Am I nuts to just run this through insurance as a collision claim and pay the dealer?

    I know I could find a mechanic to put junkyard parts on, but I don't have a good mechanic here. I think DIYing this is more than I want to take on.

    The car has 140k on it and is otherwise immaculate. Talk about something out of left field.

    Did the metal tear or is there a seam not apparent in the picture? Any chance you can find someone skilled to weld it back together?

    From what I could see, the metal tore/cracked. The bracket itself is welded to the subframe assembly, but it isn't available as a separate part.

    I had a small welding project this summer and couldn't find anyone local that wasn't months out, or just flat out passed on small jobs. I can't really drive it in its current state either, which complicates things.

    Does that control arm have any adjustment to it (for alignment), or is it just a simple tab?

    Is the crack only on one side of the control arm bracket?

    Do you see any reason why it wouldn't be possible to just plate over the crack? (drill hole for bolt, weld plate in place, install bolt - longer of needed)

    I'd expect that a 4WD fab shop could do that job easily. Whether they would do it though, for liability issues, is a different question.
