Probably can get a deal on rentals if you do so for 6 days, check out

This place is on the way from the airport to VN, and has discounts for more than one day -

Will be flying into Santiago August 3 with my wife. First week doing honeymooney things, but after that going to do some touring in central region (cajon del Maipo) and volcanos over following 2 weeks, depending on weather. We would love to get out with anyone with local knowledge. Both of us have lived in Chile and are experienced backcountry skiers looking for fun, long but generally mellow tours. I'll also be staying an extra 2 weeks after Meira goes home and hope to do some more mountaineering. Send an email to kamdh@uw.edu if you would like to meet up

The storm fizzled out leaving just a few cm of light snow which was then blown around hard and in the more exposed spots, cleaned right off. So the hacked off piste was highly variable, with the old wind buffed stuff lee side lines with a bIt of decent powder, and the rest with week old hardened tracks and mini drifts. A bits and pieces of powder kind of day, with most groomers in pretty good shape. Overall the base is below average, and many typical off piste spots that should not have rocks, do have. But as can be seen here, fun was had by these drift busters on Las Vegas.

Sweet spots were few, but fun, here I paused to reconnoiter one such:

Not a bad one, all thing considered.

But the warm weather is starting to take its toll, the usual lower down flat spots, cat tracks, and northern faces are starting to hurt.

Current deficits of rainfall (correlates aprox to snowpack) thus far this rainy season are:

    Santiago -28%
    Chillan -40%
    Temuco -3%

And no snow forecast for the central zone for the next week.

For a bit of backcountry stoke, here is a good local documentary of two rather remote volcanoes in the Bio-Bio region, south of Chillan, with ski and splitboard summiting and descents, Sierra Velluda and Callaqui, both from spring 2015. Likely less snow this year, but still doable with the right vehicle and gear.

Got email from Portillo today. They call conditions "disappointing" and not likely to improve in near future.

I heard it is pretty awful. To go all that way to ski garbage, is not good.

Like any big trip, flexibility is the key. I'd wager if you go south to Chillan or further you'll at least get good corn skiing.

Yes, this may be, not much snow has fallen in La Parva since July 15, and even less in Portillo. High winds and warm weather makes a for a triple whammy. However, as I always say, follow the snow! The Araucania region would seem to have the best snow right now, and prospects for more.

Agreed, ski areas in southern Chile are generally wimpy, and a bloody long way from the US of A, but there is lots of snow, and steeps if you look for them (and hike to them), and if you are already here or committed to come, you get the added bonus of the great variety of other stuff to do.

For example, In Corralco, with an hours walk from the top of the Cumbre lift, you can ski 1,000m vertical on the southeast face, with an average 44 degree pitch, and make it back to the lift which takes you back to the Cumbre.

Chopo Diaz, haranguing the mining companies from the top of Cerro La Parva (4,000m), then having a hoot down. Looks like today.

Snowshoe in the north or south? In the south Conguillio Lake area is good (with some infrastructure), as could be V Sollipulli (N but especially S, no infra), and Huerquehue NP. I am thinking snowed forest not far from the treeline.

Probably south - planning to tour atacama by car then head down to torres del paines eventually for the "this is the closest I can get to antarctica" without going to antarctica feeling.

As long as you are in the Atacama, it is supposed to be flowering on the coast, a rare spectacle worth seeing. Ask the locals.

Looks like Tof found his corner up the Cajon.

Took a look at the 3 Valleys yesterday, things are turning gunky, but there is still good cover on the runs. Windy, fine day for a hike.
