    guess:
tube shapes can be stronger/more efficient than solids & potentially offer vertical access points for maintenance

Yes that's the inside one of the concrete pillars looking down from the top. For reasons unknown to me they were unable to get the engineering on the metal scaffolding approved so they build them out of wood. I don't mind heights but fuck that haha. The pillars and cable stays are located where the span and height increase to accommodate the larger ships going through the channel. Most of the bridge is constructed how you described, but if you look at the last picture you can see the piers on the old bridge are spaced extremely close together - the new bridge piers are ~400ft apart in the low lying section.

This is true, and there is also a ridiculous amount of rebar in all of the CIP sections. The pier footings themselves are hollow and actually sit off the bottom of the river on piles, so you could swim under them if you had an inkling to take a dip in the Hudson. That part blew my mind a bit.

Whoa! I had to read that twice for it to sink in. Google helped with the visual and it makes a lot of sense now, but damn, still is pretty crazy.

Back no good but try and play as easy as I can swing. No pain but nerve damage still there. They have golf boards here (Alameda).
