I have been working on boats large enough to qualify for the 100ton rating the last couple years. I figured that I’d sit for the certification while I had the time recently logged. It’s about $2000, 80 hours of classroom time/test, and filling out a bunch of Federal paperwork. TWIC card/drug test/CPR cert/ Sea Service log to verify your sea time.

It would also be nice to get off the deck and sit behind the wheel. Maybe work for myself and start my own small custom charters/ boat delivery captain biz here on the Coast of Maine. Mags always welcome! You know, the great resignation… Work Summers and schedule myself for maximum time off in the Winters to travel and ski. Dare to dream!

That is awesome, good for you and good luck. I have been kicking around getting my 6 pack license. That way I can guide for my buddies fishing charter down in the Keys occasionally (kind of a retirement dream). He is severely lacking in fly fishing guides, just not sure how much time I have to commit and trying to decide if I want to do it online from dry land or wait until I can do it down on the waters where I would be applying said license. You get that license and a boat I will make it a point to come see you!

You should do it! 6 pack is all the same material for the first 56 hours of classroom time. Master then adds 24 more hours for inspected vessel regulations and some larger boat stability regulations.

I’ve already got my own boats to get started but a new boat could be written off as a business expense… Bonus!
