I’ve had this shovel for fire and trails and such since I was a Wilderness Ranger 25 years ago. It’s been with me on projects and fires up and down California, Nevada, Montana, Colorado and Alaska. Best tool I’ve ever had. I never went to a trail or rehab project, fire assignment or new job without this shovel.

View of a small part of the Swan Lake burn, off Skilak Lake Road showing where the fire jumped the Kenai River Canyon.
The fire stayed in the duff mostly and burned tree roots, but black and white spruce are full of pitch and make branches [ladders] to the ground, so most spruce groves torched to the treetops.

Pretty much every tree you can see will fall soon, and the ground for miles and miles will be covered by trees woven by the winds like you see. The country will be impassable by man or beast for decades - like the worst cutover ever. Moose, bear, wolf - uninhabitable until all those tree trunks rot. The bugs are still Alaska-grade...surprising. But I suspect that if they couldn't adapt to fires up here, there wouldn't be that many...
