IRRESVERSIBLE
• billed as a "French art psychological horror drama".
• Roger Ebert labeled it "a movie so violent and cruel that most people will find it unwatchable." (yet he gave it a thumbs up).
• extremely visceral.
• rather violent.
• incredibly arty.
• absolutely mesmerizing.
• perhaps one of the most brutal, yet artfully filmed rape sequences ever committed to film (not for the faint of heart) [critics have cited that audience reactions to both the rape scene have ranged from appreciation of its artistic merits to leaving the theater in disgust.]
• amazing score by Thomas Bangalter (of Daft Punk)

SPRING - 4/5
Lots of interesting elements going on in this indie horror film.
It is nicely acted and filmed well, too.
It had some genuine, old school pop-out-of-your-seat moments, some really tense moments, some solid lo-fi fx, and a few decent twists; that said, the ending was a wee tad bit saccharine (just by about 30-seconds).
Overall, it's a solid little film that I would highly recommend. Definitely one of those shining stars in the blazay-blah cesspool of current horror films.
PS
the lead actress is smoking hot (for those who care about such seemingly superficial things).
PPS
Ended up thinking more on the film several days after viewing and for some reason it reminded me a lot of Drag Me To Hell, more in the delivery and how the tension was built up. Also, it had a lot of moments where you were pretty sure you knew what was going to happen (and it did), but you still were on the edge of your seat waiting to see if it actually was gonna play out that way. Very few films can get away with this; making the predictable outcome a white-knuckled affair...

ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE
another over-looked modern horror gem that flips the genre on its proverbial head (i.e. fucks with all the cliched tropes).
this is a surprisingly taut, little high school slasher flick that injects some interesting twists into the genre. In many ways it’s a classic noir tale turned upside down and delivered as a teen slasher flick. Great cast, nice pacing, and a pretty decent twist that, while somewhat predictable, still has you second guessing the ending.

PATERSON
4.5/5
If you dig the idiosyncratic and eccentric films of Jim Jarmusch (Dead Man; Down By Law; Ghost Dog; Broken Flowers; Only Lovers Left Alive) then this one delivers in spades.
Addmittedly, this is a slow-burn look into the seemingly mundane life of a bus driver in Paterson, New Jersey, whose name just happens to be Paterson. The film takes place over the course of one week (Monday to Monday) and we witness Paterson going through his daily routine, dealing with his quirky girlfriend, their (but really her) dog, Marvin, and a few random denizens at the local bar.
In addition to being a bus driver, Paterson is also a closet poet.
Jarmusch thrives on repetition (the themes of black/white, twins, and water, as well as ongoing “jokes", both visual and auditory, not to mention lots of interesting reflection shots in windows) as well as a brilliant red herring and a totally obvious bit of foreshadowing that leaves you on the edge of your seat wondering if it will happen or end up being a bait/switch.
Wonderful, understated performances from all involved, too.
Also a great score from Jarmusch (making him a triple threat).
Deadpan humor galore (I laughed out loud almost through the entire film).

Green Room. It's like American History X meets Surviving the Game.

Just watched The Great Wall with Matt Damon.
Had no clue what it was about and that allowed some surprises to unfold.
Wednesday 7/28 edit: The Great Wall just got loaded onto youtube yesterday, fairly good copy.
Get it before it's taken down.
Search 'scifi Lauren Ford' - Not The Great Wall.
