Kinda surprised that this thread hasn't been started on its own (I know folks post about Amazon recs on the Netflix Instaview thread, but why?)

Recently signed up for the free trial at Amazon. I wasn't particularly thrilled by their catalog at first, but once I started digging I began to find some gems. They have a pretty solid selection of spaghetti westerns and classic kung fu films, for example.

On the Spaghetti Western tip I'd give thumbs up to:

FOUR OF THE APOCALYPSE
A strange, surreal, post-Summer of Love spaghetti western directed by noted Italian gore meister Lucio Fulci. This film is unlike any other spaghetti western you're likely to see (save for the exception of Alejandro Jodorowsky's Mexican head trip El Topo). There is bouncy, hippy-styled theme music, lots of gore, a crazy villain, revenge, redemption, cannibalism...the list goes on.

Just put that on the watchlist, thanks. Some of the BBC and PBS shows are really good.....Worricker Trilogy, The Widower, Top Boy, and White Chapel to name a few.

Vikings is legit. i'm watching The Blcklist right now and it's pretty entertaining.

there's so much overlap with netflix now that i can't remember what's even exclusive to Amazon anymore.

Alpha House - gets funnier as the season moves on. Hard to believe that they only made 2 seasons of this one. It's really good.

GREEN ROOM

Super intense survival cum containment horror flick.
Imagine Deliverance on meth, but much louder and way more claustrophobic.
Great practical effects.
Great cast.

SWISS ARMY MAN

Quite possibly the most elaborate dick & fart joke ever committed to film (or any other medium, for that matter. If Guinness had an entry for such a feat, this film would be the most serious of contenders.

If that doesn't work for you, then this is the most searingly absurd endictment of California's mental health system I've ever seen.

or, if you will, imagine Where the Wild Things Are crossed with a Monty Python skit gone horribly awry. Either that, or perhaps Robinson Crusoe as re-imagined by John Blutarsky.

EVERYBODY WANTS SOME

This may be bordering on blasphemy, but I dare say that I found EWS to be superior to Dazed and Confused, which this is a sorta-semi-sequel to.

To me, Richard Linklater has become the defacto master of what I deem hyper-real verite, a style of utilzing unknown actors and unfolding his films in a manner that feels strangely like a documentary; EWS stradles that fine line between fiction and reality, something he started way back with Slackers.
The film is basically about baseball and p***y and not much else, but damn is the dialogue and naturalistic acting amazing.

NEON DEMON

Nicholas Winding Refn's (Drive/Valhalla Rising) latest.





those folks who didn't cotton to his last film, Only God Forgives, may not like/dig/get this one either.
Refn again name-checks/thanks Alejandro Jordorowsky in the end-credits; that should give you an idea of what you're getting into..
the film reminded me a lot of Rosemary's Baby, as well as The Sentinel (two understated and creepy horror classics, imho) crossed with elements of Cinderella, Snow White, and the Bathory mythos.
but it's also a barbed wire swipe at the vapid, superficial trappings of not only Los Angeles, but the fashion world, as well as a commentary on the corruption of youth and the desire to remain youthful.
beautifully cinemagraphed, teeming with an amazing score and sound design, plus a bubbly sense of dread and uncertainty help to make it rather mezmerizing.
film was railed in Cannes for necrophelia and cannibalism; the former is a bit unnerving. the latter, well, let's just say i've seen worse on The Walking Dead.
visually arresting at the very least.
