TR: NW Michigan (now with smaller pictures and duly noted as "NOT Skiing Related")
edit: below zero, i attempted to make the pictures a variety of sizes to satisfy all tgr viewers
on the way up, i stopped in pierport, mi. the public beach was spectacular. i walked down the beach a bit and found a huge dune to climb up:
The first night was spent in a public camping area-- the Platte River Campground near Empire, MI. It was somewhat uninspiring...
Hiked Empire Trail the next day
The second night I decided to find a better place to camp-- somewhere off the beaten path a bit. Here's my secret (legal?) spot in northwest michigan-- somewhere on the coast between Pentwater and Glen arbor. good luck finding it
I decided to hike up this ridge and camp at the top of the sand blowout
The hike up was rough-- lots of brush, but the view wasnt bad (could the harbor mouth give away the locale?)
Tent pitched 400ft above lake michigan... didnt suck
great weekend

These photos are not far away from where I get married in 5-days. Western Michigan is an outdoorsman's paradise. Read Hemingway.

There's something to be said for a dead sprint down a 400 ft. dune ... Just don't trip over a root or vines.
Hey. How's the water? If it's above 64 deg. I'm game.Last edited by 13; 06-14-2005 at 05:03 AM.

I went Kayaking near warren dunes 2 weeks ago the water was 59 degrees. Last year at July fourth it too was around 59-61 degrees. The last several years, the water seems to be cool untill mid to late july.
And yes it is fun to sprint down the dunes. My four year old climbed and ran down all of Tower hill, 240 vert completly on his own.
Beauty-ful Michigan stoke!
