what was your first bike?
So either what was your first bike you had influence over the purchase of? not the kids trike that got handed down to you, but the first "real" bike?

Very first was some department store BMX. It was red, that's all I remember. First bike I had a hand in choosing and helped pay for was a circa 1996 Giant Rincon.

I bought a Haro backtrail dirt jumping bike in like 2001/2 that was my first bigger purchase...
But I'd consider my first 'real' bike an FBM frame that I built up from a mix of custom parts in high school. (not my photo but similar to this)

*Edit - realizing I'm not as old as others on here...Also all my bikes I fully paid for myself working from when I was like 12.
Beyond BMX though, a family friend gave me an 80s Raleigh touring bike for free in great condition when I went to college. It was wayyy too small for me but I rode that thing all throughout college, commuting purposes for various jobs, and even a few 80-90 mile rides with friends (my back still hurts just thinking about those)

^I literally shipped this across the US to commute (refused to buy a car)Last edited by Groomer Gambler; 03-08-2017 at 02:14 PM.

My first real bike was a 1992 Rocky Mtn stratos that I bought used after first year at UBC. A friend took me up Mt Fromme the following year and I was hooked. First order of business after that was upgrading to v-brakes! I still have the Rocky, it is now my commuter bike.

1980 Nishiki Royale, like this but without the rack and mirror (and I think I removed the kickstand):
My high school was 5 miles from home - when I started my parents offered me the choice of a city bus pass or money to buy a new bike. I picked the bike. Did a 100 mile ride on it in OP shorts and tennis shoes when I was 14.

First Bike bought with my own cash
1984 Diamond Back Viper. Still have it.
First Mountain Bike
1995 GT Tequesta. Shouldn't have sold it at the yard sale for $50. Same one but not my pic.
First full suspension mountain bike
2001 GT iDrive Race. Sold it to my boss and he still rides it. Same one but not my pic

First bike I bought for myself was in college, around 1991. A Skykomish "Marble Point" mountain bike, 21 speed, fully rigid, heavy cheap steel, and featured all Shimano 200GS (plastic shifters). Bought it at Costco and assembled it myself, though didn't have a clue what I was doing. It was like $200 and all I could afford. Got heavily into mountain biking, stuck a Scott Unishock suspension fork on it, and later converted it into a touring bike with drop bars (without the Scott fork). Rode that bike from coastal Oregon across to Montana in 1994.
Second mountain bike was a big upgrade. A 1992 Specialized M2 Stumpjumper, with a Specialized-branded RockShox Mag 21 fork. Rode that one until around 2001, when it was replaced with a Dean titanium something-or-other. The Dean was a dream bike at the time, but it had ridiculous lateral flex so I didn't keep it long. It also came with an ISIS bottom bracket, which I think was the start of my hatred for idiotic bike industry "advances."

I worked a paper route for 2 years to save my money and bought a REI touring 10 speed for $300 in 1980 that was soon stolen out of my parents garage. That was WAY before the Novara brand came out.

Got a sweet Huffy I picked out for my 6th birthday as the first bike I had influence over.
First bike I bought with my own money was a Ross Mt. Pocono in like 1994 or 1995. Upgraded to a Gary Fisher Kaitai in 1997 mostly because I was convinced I needed GripShift.

Yeah buddy, same here. Mine was way cooler though, it had checkerboard pads that went well with my Vans. It was one of those "Sorry kid, Christmas is over. Could you go grab something out of the garage?" surprises.
First MTB was a 1986 Diamond Back Curaca. 24" wheels for the win. It is still my townie.

Yeah those checked California Lite pads were pretty cool. You can still find them. You should snag a set and put them on your Yeti.

would have been a CCM with coaster brakes which got stolen and then a bunch of bikes to deliver papers, I discovered the Vancover police auctions where I could buy a couple of bikes for 5$ each and fix them up a little
the 1st real mtn bike was an 86 marin bear valley which I still use for ripping around townLee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know

03-08-2017, 01:29 PM #21It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.
I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

I had a Schwinn BMX bike, but my first mtn bike was a used Peugeot exactly like this one in '87
Then in '90 I had this Stumpy on layaway after the season at the village and my girlfriend lent me the money to buy it right away...so of course I married her years later I still have this frame and fork. Pipe dreams about putting it back together some day, but it will probably just hang somewhere.
