    Creepiest/Weirdest Place You've Been

Growing up I was pretty fascinated by the stories in weird NJ. I actually visited a couple places mentioned in the articles, some much more freaky than others.

I'm not very claustrophobic, but about 5th or 6th grade almost got lost in a series of 4' diameter drainage culverts with two friends. The tales that surrounded the complex of pipes didn't add any humor to that situation.

Another time on a hike up a stream bed in the Adirondacks with a bud we accidentally ended in the middle of someone's backwoods shooting range.

Generic, but the most creeped out I've ever been was exploring the Overbrook Asylum in Cedar Grove NJ.

    Unfortunately, I believe it's being demo'd currently.

So, what's the creepiest place you've been? Whether it be something supernatural, crime ridden area, whatever...

weirdest place I've ever been was delicate arch. this was years ago, it wasn't nearly as famous--or as crowded as it is now--and I didn't know what to expect. Clearly it was constructed by space aliens.

USCGC Duane @ 120ft underwater. Since all the hatches are sealed, we had to "break in", meaning go through a hole that had been cut in the floor under the map-table in the wheelhouse. The paint that the CG uses resisted corrosion and invertebrate growth for years so the bulkheads were still clean. We ran lines, like we did cave-diving, to keep from getting lost. We wandered two decks before heading back out, seeing plenty of fish. I kept expecting a giant eel or huge Mako shark around the next corner, simply because the setting was so movie-like. Besides my imagination, Shit was INTENSE.

Some random bar/greasy spoon at the bottom of Snowshoe, WV. It's where we met the Gobbler and it's where he disappeared soon thereafter. Place was straight up Twin Peaks.

Bethel, Alaska, weirder than Adak. Also Hughes Alaska, and Venetie AK.

Rock Springs, Wyoming belongs here. And Borrego Mesa NM. Trona, CA. Tonopah, NV.

I could, and might, go on.

I have pictures of that. I was flying a tanker above it. Totally surreal.

In the running would be rolling up on "the highway of death " about 20 minutes after the last plane took it's run. Utter carnage.

East or Bust - I actually grew up a few miles away from Overbrook. I never went there, but I did spend some time tooling around the already-abandoned out-buildings of the adjacent Mountain Sanatorium on my Schwinn back in the early nineties. http://weirdnj.com/stories/abandoned...in-sanatorium/

Then I remember in high school a friend of mine bought a quad ATV and we headed back there. I have a distinct memory of hanging onto the back of that thing at 50 mph in a Bell bicycle helmet watching the satanic graffiti go by and hoping my friend wouldn't get us both killed.

Definitely creepy as you like back there.
