It was pretty crazy at the Village last night - a pseudo carnival like atmosphere. Amazingly high winds at the base right when the power went out.

From the snow report this AM:

Wednesday, February 8th. Due to unforseen events from last nights storm Teton Village has been left without power. As a result, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort WILL NOT BE IN OPERATION THIS MORNING. We are working hard to resolve the problem and apologize for any inconvience this may cause. We will keep you posted on our operating status as events unfold. We thank you for your patience and understanding with this situation. Please stay tuned for operating status updates at Jacksonhole.com -MB

    Lower Valley Energy
    42 mins ·

Jackson, WY (2-8-17 8:04 am) Major outage that began yesterday evening near Teton Village. Seventeen transmission poles buckled on the Moose-Wilson road causing a major outage in Teton County.
The current game plan this morning is to clear snow to gain access to each transmission pole and then begin erecting temporary wooden poles.
The cause for the downed transmission lines are still not yet known though the area is experiencing higher than normal wind gusts (up to 90+ mph).
We currently estimate 3,500-4,000 customers are without power as of this writing. The areas affected include Teton Village, the airport, Solitude, John Dodge and Bar B Bar.

We began re-routing power last night - we expect power to be out for at least several days in some areas.

All Lower Valley Energy crews have been dispatched along with crews from 5 neighboring utilities heading here to assist.

Pussies. We had 100+mph winds at Mammoth for the last two days and the mountain still operated. Granted they were down to one shitty little chair, a poma and a platter (the last two serving about 50 vertical feet) but still...;-)

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Steel power poles snapped!? Insane. Gust must have been north of 100mph. Edit: Just saw the graph above. Wow.

Airport is still having issues getting backup power going. The DEN-JAC flight I was scheduled on last night still hasn't left (glad I cancelled, though my skis are MIA). Also saw a flood watch notice for tomorrow in the valley due to rain. WTF?

Where is coffin and how are the winds so much higher then the summit? Definitely doesn't look like a microburst or convective event though, seems like it was sustained for several hours.

Does the resort have backup power of its own? Generators?

Am heading to Jackson early next week...
