Man...I absolutely LOVED America's "Horse with No Name" as a kid! I was really into horses as a kid...4H equestrian club and all, when we came back to the U.S. from living abroad.
I think Gordan Lightfoot had some good tunes from that era, as well. Marshall Tucker Band. Of course Jim Croce. Boston's Peace of Mind (which I have always liked more than the their more popular "More than a Feeling").
Some really crappy shit from the early seventies, as well...but that is true of every era.

I'm no Southerner by ANY stretch of the imagination, but damned if I can't get into some Doobie Brothers "Mississippi Black Water".

GSH was unreal. He played the club in DC I worked at, and they shot a movie about it. I was just off the stage for this show and I helped move stuff and whatnot for the movie set, I got to say like 3 words to him but it was cool. It was a great club, The Wax Museum, hence the movie title "Black Wax". Production values were high in that place.
it's like 90 minutes long but check it sometime. It's not all concert footage, there's other some cool segments too. The section right after the first song was taped about 2 blocks from the club, it was a different city back then.

I wonder how Hot Rod Lincoln got in there. A rockabilly classic, unlike the other trite schmaltz in the list. I've heard Bill Kirchin play Hot Rod Lincoln live at least a half dozen times and it doesn't get old. I've been trying to get the riff down on my tele for years but no luck.

Fifth year of college (2000), me and my roommates briefly had a contest to see who could hook up with the most girls...the catch was that you had to put on Croce's Operator when you got back to the apartment AND you had to pour your date a glass of brandy from a shitty decanter we bought at a thrift shop. It definitely added a worthy obstacle to the challenge. I vaguely remember getting some very interesting reactions and occasionally accusatory looks. But the ones that dug it were keepers.
Long live Croce.

You folks that like music from this era should go see Ringo Starr and his All-Star band. We saw them last April, and it was like going back in time. In a good way.
Well maybe I'm the faggot America
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda
