PM me your address. I'm eyeballing your gear and I have something you need.

    Ok. Your loss, pal.

Here's one from last night. My folks have a strategically placed crick behind their house.

Been doing things, but it seems most of it has gone undocumented. Still got a few snapshots.

Got some fun stuff on the horizon before we start the 2018 thread.

Help me figure this fly fishing thing out.

    My one question is why?

I am really a noob, but a noob lucky enough to live a few klicks from some of the best Steelhead and Salmon fishing in BC. Since I was a lad most of the folks I fished with used a "typical" angling set up - with spoons or spinners.

So when I started fishing last year that is what I went with. A 10'6 rod with an Abu Garcia Ambassaduer reel that I had gotten from a buddies garage sale. I have had great luck with it and am really starting to love getting out and squeezing the fishes - Coho and Steelhead mostly, but pinks and dollys as well.

The locals I fish with are mostly on similarish systems - but everyone from away shows up with fly fishing gear (to be fair a number of locals fly fish as well - just not in my crew).

So, what is the attraction? Do you catch more, is it just funner to cast?

The compact fly rods appeal to me as I access a couple rivers on my dirt bike. But it does look a little like Tele-skiing. Taking something that is simple and fun and making it more complex because you think it looks cooler?

..or is this a if you don't get it you won't get it kind of thing?

It was the late 90's. You know people were trying things. I was young. We all go through phases.

That nice Canadian lady did make a persuasive argument for fishing.

But maybe I am not making the question clear enough - I get fishing, I love fishing, I am an up at 530am plowing through triple-overhead-devils-club addicted to catching fish.

My question is why on a fly vs. say chucking lures at the river?

Here is another vid of a very persuasive Canadian and local bad ass - Niomi, making another strong argument for fishing:

aclnpdx - are you sure that isn't a Bass fisherman?

OK, I'm actually going to do this.

Check out this 26 second video. It's a fish sporadically rising on Sunday. How should I try and catch it?

Here's the stuff I know, (or think I know), to help you play along.
I have already stopped at the fly shop to confirm my thoughts that the genus of the main bug hatching now is Pseudocloens. The specie may matter, but I don't think so. It's a very small, size 20/22? bug that struggles to emerge through the surface tension to become a dun. So what. The way the fish is rising, (its not sticking it's head out, but kinda eating below the surface), at least in my mind confirms it's eating the almost ready to emerge nymphs. I think there's a term for this, but I forgot. Superimagio? Subimagio? You google it up.

So how do I cast to this fish on a this windy day? I have to do a very difficult hook cast of sorts so the fly gets to the fish before the line, (which it will see and stop feeding, ending this game), or I have to get myself into position. Well the position is up in front of me to the left, and it's deep over there, so kind of a pain, and even if I go over there, it will probably spook this fish since that's the water that is pouring over that gravel bar it's feeding on.

Oh, what should I cast to it? I decide to put on a 20 Baetis emerger, then trail about 6 inches of 6X fluorocarbon off the bend and tie on a size 20 nymph pattern that kinda looks like a pseudocloens. This way, I can track the fly, and maybe it won't be spooked by the emerger since I did see one Baetis fly by earlier. Maybe it'll make a mistake and eat the emerger.

Oh, and I don't give a flying fuck about casting. Although I am now a huge fly fisherman and cast very fucking well.

And so I begin the game...

Long leader. 14-16'. I fish a lot of water and fish like that, and I think the long leader is my biggest advantage. Super fun in the wind, too.
