Starting to have some decent hours on mine. So far, I like them. Equal or better to kingpins in just about every way one could assess in 6 days of use.
Stepping in took a couple times to adjust but is a total non issue. Skiing performance is very good, toe feels very nice indeed. I would be hard pressed to pick between my wardens and the tectons in a blind test on the same ski me thinks.
Uphill my only gripe at this early stage is balling of snow over the brake pad / just ahead of the heel piece. Will experiment with solutions as it's like being on a defacto first riser. Pretty sure lee mentioned this and his solution some ways back in the thread.
Overall very pleased. Now that I'm through figuring out brake sizes, the only remaining question mark is durability (for me ) and other folks experience leaves me cautiously optimistic.

Re snow balling on the brake pad. It's basically a feature of wet snow and plastic. I do the same as with Dynafits and whack the pad with my pole periodically
Re brakes not deploying. I learned from Lindahl to gently file a bit of plastic away from the brake holder to prevent catching

I talked with black diamond support. They said fill out warranty claim form on website and submit for new ties. then we chatted about grinding down myself they said it's an option, and it was my choice, although they recommend toe replacement.
if u call and ask, bet they would tell u their stance on this.

I wasn't going to bother, but now that I'm pulling mine from one pair of skis and mounting on another, might as well get the new toes, I figure. Did they hint at how long to expect to wait for replacement?

huh - am I misunderstanding or are you guys saying that BD/Fritschi are willing to replace the toe binding over the knee fall/bump issue?

Yes, that's what they said. Although I am skiing the boot that I think is most impacted (prev ten vulcan) based on the pictures I seen.

BD approved my warranty request for toe replacement, I haven't been able to send them in yet but expect it'll be as fast and easy as every other time I've done an RMA with them.

Prove me wrong."

The only issue being the knee fall/bumping one?

When did you guys submit your claims? Prior to mine on the last page of this thread, I hope?

Wonder what BD is going to do with those toes, swap the lever bits and sell them as refurbs?

Might be nice to see if you can keep one or buy it cheap with your warrantee replacement. Grind the nub and keep it for a spare on trips

Heard back from BD today.
"I'm sending the new toes out today. Please send old toes in when you get a minute."
I really appreciate that they're sending out the new ones immediately and not waiting to receive the old ones. A+ service from Black Diamond.

Hmmm.
Maybe my mistake asking "customer service" not "warranty" dept but response was very different.
I got a "here's a link to the list of compatible boots".
Does one have to ruin a pair of boots first?

I didn’t mention my boots, just that I wanted the updated toes that address the forward fall while skinning issue.

the inital reply was not very impressive: (paraphrased) "This is a relatively uncommon issue with approx 30 known instances, in spite of thousand of units sold. None of the known cases are with the boots you have, and as such this will not be cause for a warranty replacement of the toe."
The significance here being one has to actually damage ones boots in order for it to be a warranty case. This is a very odd sentiment as it incetivices people to just damage a boot in order get a warranty replacement or use the gear timidly instead of the warranty replacement being proactive. I do not know what liability if any Fritschi / the local dealer has for any damage to boots.
6-8x pairs of Vipecs and 4x pairs of Tectons later I must admit to being less than impressed.
update: apparently the reasoning went like this - the only way to get a warranty replacement was if a warranty claim was made, but a warranty claim was only validated if there had been damage to the boot. I asked the local Fritschi guy to reply to the second paragraph - meaning, who takes the cost if the design fault produces a damaged boot, if there where an official warranty policy in place in advance that was enforced elsewhere, but the request to proactively replace the toe in advance was denied. I do not suspect I will get an answer, and if I do then I am guessing they will sidestep the issue entirely.Last edited by kid-kapow; 01-03-2019 at 09:43 AM.
