Figured it out. The only path to changing stash profile name is through the FAQ and it's called the display name rather than username.

I stlil had to pick a username to register, just the other day. It just didn't become either my login name or my forum handle. Pure luck is the only reason I even noticed anything wrong before my first post, and figured out how to set the username in a second place.

The idea that it should be as absolutely easy as possible to join, to the point of making it less hospitable to the people already here, is pretty lame.

I don't know if it is true, but in the FAQ it states that you can't change your username by yourself, and you need to have an administrator do it if necessary in extreme circumstances. If true, this could be a deterrent to new users fixing their license plate names.

I think a better model is just to require new users fill in the registration form properly in the first place, and turn off the auto generation of user names.

What was the reason for not setting the stash name and forum name to be identical and setting it up when you first arrive? Everyone complains about the mxxxxx user names anyway, so why even generate them?

That decision was made before my time, and it would be difficult to change at this point.
