In the Year 2000: V-Brakes Related

I'm about 15 years behind and upgrading from mid '90s cantilever brakes with a center pull to v-brakes from the '00s. Is it possible to make a successful swap without buying new levers? LBS says yes but I'm seeing full pull with barely any pad contact.

You can make it work but it's fickle and it sucks.

    Buy new levers.

Problem solvers has an adapter but two adapters are going to cost more than a new set of V-brake levers. Only worth it if you want to run drop bars (and even then I'd run mini-Vs instead).

Centerpull canti systems generated most of their leverage in the big ass brake levers, which still wasn't very much power. Then side pull V Brakes came along with their leverage generated at the brake.
Trying to use canti levers with V brakes results in a whole bunch of squishy feeling cable pull, finishing with a wheel stopping, high leverage rim grab. Gets real sketchy on the front wheel. Pony up $20 for some V-brake levers (Avid single digit are a great value).

I'd bet that someone on here has a set of V-levers that they'd send you for cheap / free.

They're like $16 at the LBS so shipping isn't even worth it. The '90s tech on this bike is something special. It will be nice to have brakes that work well.

Buy Avid Single Digit 7 levers for $20. Had Avid levers for about 12+ years. No slop.

Seconded, I have Avid SD7 levers and calipers and have found them to be impressively powerful and durable. Totally worth the money, as are Kool Stop pads.

Anyone with a line on a set of Grip Shift grips? Looking to replace the faded red with black.

Why not just get the XOs?

^ Not familiar with XOs but assume they are another shifting system. Found some new old stock grips on ebay.

Behold, the 1996 Cannondale F700. New brakes, brake levers, grips, pedals, tires, and tubes. Flipped stem for comfort. It's a commuter.
