Having said that my OWC Mercury Elite Pro is chugging along just fine at home. But drives do just shit the bed from time to time.
It works well, and combine it with a weekly automatic backup to Amazon glacier for deep storage if they fail. Best $2 a month you can spend to sleep easy that your data is safe out in the cloud if both drives go sour. Yeah, they'll charge more to pull it out, but at that point it's worth it, and dead simple to setup.

I have a Transcend. It's rubberized and rugged as shit!

I could take it in the back country, if there were computers there.

I'm sending the drive back to them (it's one year old, and has a three year warranty); they will inspect it, and probably send me a new one. We shall see.

SSDs also make great cache devices for large ZFS storage pools. So if you're running a VM in your laptop off a folder on your NAS that is cached with a SSD, the VM will boot and run at SSD speeds. (Yes, you can cache a specific folder like that with ZFS.)

And if you're slinging big data in your bedroom and doing a lot of sync writes, slc nand is really good for intent logs (aka power-safe write cache).

But an SSD doesn't stream a movie to a home theater or upload shit to Crashplan any faster or better than a RAID array of HDDs, so why spend the $$?
It's about failure rates with mechanical HDD's with me. I've had a couple fail, it's worth it to me for the extra cost, time is money.
