Freezing rain = no bueno driving, especially when you have 300 miles to cover... I think we are glad we stayed the night in Mammoth. Gonna see what its like in the morning, but this time I think the road likely blows. Passable, absolutely, but sketchy and requiring one to slow down, also absolutely. That would make the 4:30 drive into at least 6 based on what it took some friends this afternoon.

Please no rain on the upper mountain. Come on Ullr!

Just got tow roped out the hot springs by a 4-runner. The drive to Bishop required attention. I saw one plow and it was on Crowley Lake blvd.I like to use the E-brake going downhill. Mc Donald's is cranking Zeppelin and just caught some golf highlights.

I'm usually less freaked out my the road conditions and more frightened by the speeding Escalade rollin on bald Dubs that's passing people like it's the 405.

But 4/all wheel drive literally glues your car to the road right? And tires last for 60k miles in LA as well, facts. Your point about the other guys is well taken, especially on the tire front, I see people on the daily that are basically on racing slicks rolling around town here....

We're driving up tomorrow morning for the week, anyone going to be up M-F?

We left Friday around 230 pm to miss the storm on Saturday. Other than a couple of little stretches on the 395 the roads were fine. There was one Escalidiot flying up behind people, tailgaiting, just being really aggressive. He got a ticket a few miles before the 395 meets the 14 and I clapped as I drove past him. I gave him the thumbs up while the cop was writing him up. Not sure if he saw me or not.

    Mammoth 16/17

This is worth posting in here.

Those crowns off Chair 23 ... Wipe Outs, Drop Outs had been shot with 40 lbs artillery and no results. Then, a single 2 lbs hand charge at a sweet spot (probably a thinner rocky convexity) ripped out the entire face. Kevin Quinn has a sick image on his Facebook page right now.

Speaking of rafting. No skiing anywhere in Tahoe today so decided to check out downtown Reno. The Truckee is flowing!

Looking good toward the weekend per Howard:

Latest Satellite water vapor motion shows an intense upper low west of Washington and Oregon coast. This upper wave according to the models will be replaced by the larger scale cyclone itself, as it moves eastward. The timing of this feature is to move it through Mammoth Lakes Tuesday night with an intense vertical motion field. Thus the main IOP, (Intensive operational period) will be Tuesday night into Early Wednesday morning where snowfall rates may be in the 2 to 4 inch per hour range for a time…. The Town of Mammoth at the 8000 foot level is likely to experience 3 feet to as high as 5 feet of snowfall between Monday AM and Thursday afternoon. Again the heaviest snowfall rates are likely Tuesday night…..

Outlook: We are still expecting a partly cloudy but fair weekend with high in the 20s. Lows in the single digits. Skiing will be on cold packed powder with deep powder as well. Mammoth Mountain is likely to have received totals over the upper mountain in excess of 18 feet….

Just got into town. Smooth ride from LA, sunny most of the way only a little nautical around the airport and off the exit but really a 3/10 winter road conditions. Haven't seen this much snow up here his early in years....light blowing snow now and looks like the early innings still.

Snow skied pretty good today. The snow last night covered most of the frozen crust. Pushing in like 6 inches or so in the trees.
I got my Vans on but they look like sneakers.....

Update from the snowy land of hoth: Only 15 & rope tows spinning, gusting to 20+ in town/village. Been snowing since since I got up at 7 and is picking up pace over last half hour. Glad we came up yesterday though, travel looks pretty dicey today.

Anyone around today? Rest of week?

Looking to Carpool from LA +/or Rent a Room nightly/monthly Mammoth

    Hi All

After 15 seasons in Whistler, I've relocated to Los Angeles and have a Cali4nia pass - have had 7 really epic days in Mammoth this season, one one June, over two trips and I am stoked.

If anyone has a line on a monthly rental in Mammoth or nightly rental in someone's house type thing - please let me know. Also looking to Carpool to Mammoth/Big Bear - cause I only have a motorcycle right now.

    Thanks!

Just crazy to watch this, especially the photos being posted on Snowman's page. I don't remember the 395 being closed for this long, ever, and I've been in some gnarly MM storms.

I would poke around here for a ski lease. Also check Craigslist. You are a bit late in the game, but you never know. Our ski lease group is full for the season but if we lose a member we might be interested in someone else for next year. There is also a hostel in Mammoth, but I don't know much about it.

You may want to join a ski club. The Huntington Beach ski club goes up about every other week, Thursday through Sunday for $180 per trip. Meetup will have a bunch of trips posted too.
