Haven't been to Cuba but I have been to Iraq. The vast majority of people live in abject poverty or course many will say that most people lived better when Saddam was in power before Desert Storm. There are places in Iraq and Saudi Arabia that are basically on the same level as biblical time when it comes to basic infrastructure. No electricity, running water or sanitary sewer. Open sewers and one well for the entire village/town. Burning camel dung for cooking and heating. Sounds much better than Cuba. Even in major cities in Iraq most people live pretty marginally now.

Not sucking Castro's dick and I think that he did do a lot of terrible things, but compared to some of our leaders and others around the world Castro was better than some and worse than others. This idea that everything in this world is black or white, good or bad, right or wrong really shows the ignorance, bigotry and stupidity of people.

Why do we need to compare? A piece of shit is a piece of shit, regardless of the consistency.

His kids are probably negotiating for a tower right now. "Hey, Raul, sorry about your bro. Say, do you reeealllyyy want that sweet Obama deal to happen? Ok, Hey, we think we can make this work. Our people on the ground have told us about a sweet little spot for a hotel/casino. Yeah, hahaha, remember casinos? Yeah, lots of cash falling off the table with those. Right. Call us. Adios!"

The Japanese were ready to surrender before we dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We had already leveled several of their cities and killed way more civilians with our fire bombing than the total amount of casualties from the atomic bombs. After both bombs were dropped the Japanese were no more ready to surrender than they were before. The real threat for the Japanese was that the Soviets had entered the war and with the massive assault on Japanese territory in Manchuria and the northern islands the Japanese were fearful of losing Hokkaido to Soviet control. This is what pushed them to surrender to us and our terms.

Do you read any history or just spout off stupid shit that's been passed down? You probably think Hitler's Germany was defeated because of the invasion on D-Day.

Some sample bias here don't you think?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not champing at the bit to move to Cuba, but to say the US has had a propaganda/smear effort against Castro over the past 50+ years would be somewhat of an understatement.

you know what they say about castro in cuba?

He did great on education, health, and culture and he failed on breakfast, lunch and dinner

but being a dumb ass vermonter with your head firmly inserted in your anus, you wouldn't know that.

so let's not even start on his human rights record, and that he stayed in power for 50 years by screaming about the united states which is an actual democracy'

so again riser, as you have in so many posts, shown that you have the political IQ of a wet cardboard box

well done - slow golf clap

bonus points on remembering batista name though, who said education in vermont sucks obviously has met you

Because Castro made it hard, but not impossible, for the skilled and motivated to flee? Yup.

Castro needed people like Pierre Trudeau to kiss his ass and pretend to stick it to the US to stay in power. Maybe XXXer can stick up for the Tamil Tigers next.

Most of the true old school, blue blooded Castro haters still pining for the halcyon days of sipping saocos at their northern caribbean casas are as dead as Castro, or are hanging on in extended care facilities being staffed by descendants of their old household staff.
Scientists now have decisive molecular evidence that humans and chimpanzees once had a common momma and that this lineage had previously split from monkeys.

i am not a hippie and i don't need a cause. i am capable at looking at things independent of a framework of american exceptionalism and the resultant black and white hypocrisy. i also spent many years reading about latin america, my ug degree was in latin american studies and a year of ug was spent in south america, a semester of my law studies were in south america, i have volunteered for local s.american and central american environmental ngos on site and remotely, i spent a year in central america investigating. us based multinational fruit companies and their long, sordid, violently antidemocratic history and present. i've also been to cuba and seen with my own eyes the complexity and sadness of the situation, both largely a result of being starved and attacked in a million different ways by the u.s. i've also seen great pride among citizens in a country that has done so much for so many with so little. most experiments would warp or fail with the empire looming 90 miles away. cuba is not a failure of anything because we will never known what they could have done without the world's biggest predator trying to kill it. like i said, one only need to look at the history of near unanimous condemnation by the u.n. - developed and third world countries alike -- for decades. i'm not being spook. i'm being like a lot of people outside an insane, vengeful, hypocritical, brainwashed u.s.

I'm trying to figure out why shitty behavior by the US government somehow excuses Castro. He was a criminal, a murderer and an oppressive thug. Is he hitler or pol pot? No. Has US foreign policy hurt South America and Cuba in many instances? Yes. But it still doesn't excuse Castro from his acts.

Some reading on his record with gays.

What you'll never hear mentioned is how Pablo Escobar flew a bunch of his guys from Columbia in choppers, all with Cuban papers, and dropped them onto the Cuban 'refugee' boats out on the open water as they made the crossing to Miami.
