absolutely. I wish there were better films of those people running gates; the only ones I see are really hard to watch, and I remember everything being so much clearer back in the day on our little 19"" black-and-white TV. I think lousy tech created better imagination.

Hell yeah, I memba. One year, 96-97 I think, the north face was open with tons of powder in early December for free skiing. Sleeping on Pete's couch in the barn, and skiing for free, can't beat that with a stick.

Gotta throw this out. Toni Sailer was winning Olympic golds in the 50's, marketing his ski brand in the late 60's, and selling high dollar ski clothing after that. Had his fiberglass hollow channel white skis with original Look Nevada's for a few years and there wasn't a ski like it at the time. A published ad for his ski's claimed they turned ice into powder. How do you not acquire a ski like that? How they died: I tried skiing across the access road to parking lot (freshly graveled with an inch or two of snow hiding the shit) and made one big turn, sparks flying off the edges all the way. Damage terminal, so much for those

The ski rack at the Burfield Lodge. Tod Mtn, 1993. February. A typical Tuesday. At some point in the day.
8 sets of skis in the rack. 2 pair of 225cm DH boards; a pair of 223's; a pair of "lady" DH 215's; 2 pairs of 210cm Super G; 2 pairs of 205 slalom. There was nary a racecourse to be seen, nor was anyone training for a race. Those were the days. Ski, party, sleep, repeat. It was a simple life.

Dick Hard was a cousin of my neighbors. U.W. football player, damn big dude. In high school, attendance roster was being taken in class. Naturally the teach calls out for, you guessed it, Hard, Dick. My neighbor swore it happened, I'm not sure but it's funny if it did.

I patrolled with a volunteer who was also an FBI agent. His name was Richard Head and he loved introducing himself as.... you guessed it. Who knew an FBI agent could have a bent sense of humor.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Rope tows that took you off the ground. Paradise had one. There were others. Stuck (springs) Poma lift seats too. Nothing like rotating, feet off the snow hoping your skis hit the track in alignment when you touched down. Old days Hyak had them occasionally.

Mt. Ripley up in Houghton, Keweenaw Peninsula, MI, had a rope tow that served the upper bowl that would smoke your mittens. And it had a huDge swale in it that for those of us under 100lbs would cause some air time between the hummocks.

I lived across the street from Dick Barrymore as a kid. He travelled a lot and his son "Ted Shred" was usually the one holding the place down. One night Ted came home drunk, somehow mistook our house for his, and broke our front window pounding on it demanding to be let in. My grandparents were visiting at the time and trying to sleep in the living room while the drunk man was screaming and smashing things.
