When was the last time a bike brand was improved by an infusion of venture capital money? Fisher became Gary Fisher and died. I have a DiamondBack overdrive carbon comp I would love to replace with a similar bike that made you feel you got a high value xc bike, but they don’t make it. I could go through a history of defeats. Where is there a victory?

Thanks toast, I was hoping.
There’s really nothing analogous to the e-bike “dilemma” right now. For example, with Backcountry skiing one of my local spots might get a little crowded, so I just moved further out. I climb a little further. It’s the exact opposite with ebikes. Like in golf, who cares if people ride in carts? It doesn’t really hurt the course any. Has Pickleball ruined tennis? I’m not sure.

They do, and jerks like me that want it all are having a hard time resisting the temptation when the city/county/state really wants to subsidize our electric snowmobiles. Gothic is really the only juicy non-motorized winter corridor in this valley and it's groomed for fat bikes. Realistically its juicer as a spring access route. Not sure if it'll get interesting or if fat biking just sucks enough to keep itself under control, even with motors added on.

Tipperary loop in Fraser - what a disappointment. Rode a bunch of dirt road to get to the climb, the climb was OK, but the descent was terrible (Spruce Creek).

Perhaps it used to be better? I know it was always considered a "classic" WP/Grand County ride, but that must have been back when there basically was nothing else to ride.

It was still a nice day riding around on dirt in the woods with my wife.

Ha...something like that. It's was fun in the 90s. When bikes were less capable and the downhill was singletrack, it was a better trail.

Remember. This is the Fraser River Valley. There is no classic anything besides perhaps moguls.

I've only ridden in the valley about 4 times in the last 30.

I’ve been thrilled and disappointed massively on trails that are considered classics.

The Luge in Orange County on the other hand was great.

Rode American Standard a few years back in Jim Thorpe, PA and found it a gigantic waste of time. Not fun, not flowy, not good in a hard technical ride way either. Imagine it would have been even worse on older bike tech in all the worst ways.

Kind of how I felt about Monarch Crest.
Long? Yes
Great Views? Yes
Great riding? Meh. The last downhill section was pretty fun purely because of the erosion. The rest was very average, non-descript riding.
Starvation Creek out was the best part of the ride.

I sort of agree, but adding a motor to a bike doesn't make you good at bike handling. That part's still hard. Arguably even harder, because now your bike's super heavy.

That is a problem in itself, since the motor allows people to access trails they would never put in the effort to get to on their own. A tough climb has often been used as a filter to keep less experienced riders away from difficult trails. With ebikes that filter no longer works.

My more difficult trail sees limited traffic since it's a PITA to get to, which is 100% by design. A few times this year while digging up there I've had groups of mopeds coming down who were clearly in over their heads. Maybe 1 or 2 could ride the features. The others, rather than walk, rode off trail around them. Right in front of the builder. And were promptly told not to come back. No way those clowns would have made it up there without the motor. Now I'm stuck spending time blocking cheater lines rather than improving the trail.

That brings me to the other point, why I really dislike them. I ride bikes to get away from people, from idiots, from blown out sanitized trails. So I head to the harder to get to more pristine trails that most people won't put in the effort to get to. Now with mopeds more people can get to those trails with minimal effort and they're getting trashed just like the easy to access front country trails. No different than other issues like the "10 best secret hikes" influencer articles, side by sides or posting locations. Whenever something becomes too easy to get to it inevitably gets ruined.


Those of you who don't have issues with surrons yet be greatful. We have those here in socal in growing numbers. Just like any motorized hobby they are modifying the shit out of those bikes with upgraded motors, motocross tires, etc. then tearing up the local city trails. When you see the damage those things cause it makes you forget how annoyed you are at pedal assist.

Yep - Monarch Crest is just a means to get to the Children of the Crest. Of which Green's is the best, with Starvation a pretty close second in my book.
