For me, the rule isn't irrelevant. It provides the default that people can follow and expect others to follow, BUT there's nothing wrong with encounters where people mutually choose not to follow the default. Key word there is mutually. So yeah, sometimes I'm in a groove going up and choose not to stop. Other times I hear the descending rider and stop and hop off the trail to let them continue ripping while I take a breather.

It's also not a rule. It's a dumb suggestion by IMBA that's gone on long enough. Who's easier to stop, someone going downhill or uphill. Who's making less noise and more likely to hear the other bike, someone climbing or descending.
It's dumb. Because imba is dumb. And physics exists.
All that really needs to be a rule is "don't be a dick"
I feel guilty when people stop on a fun descent just because they see me climbing. I don't give a rat's booty if I have to lean up against a tree for 1.5 seconds.Besides the comet that killed the dinosaurs nothing has destroyed a species faster than entitled white people.-ajp

Back to our previously scheduled programing:
I'm not psyched that poison ivy and tick season is in full force. Kind of missing the cold rainy winter with no vegetation. Crazy, right?!?!However many are in a shit ton.

Thankfully our tick season in Socal is over. Didn't seem to materialize even, which is shocking considering all the rain we got this winter followed by warm weather. There have been years where I'll go on a ride and brush off dozens of ticks from my shorts. I've only seen a handful so far this year.
Poison oak though, now in full swing. I've spent a few evenings recently with a 2-gallon sprayer nuking that shit from orbit. Then come back in a few weeks and behead the remains. I had the PO well under control about 5 years ago and had to do very little on it the last few years with dry winters. This year the stuff is back with a vengeance.

Not in Colorado they aren't. Found a bunch for $1200 or less. Full race builds. Only kooks want them here.

Makes me think of a couple local facebook mtb and parts for sale groups..
People everyday posting bikes for sale, at near retail cost. The way some of them talk up their bikes is annoying:
"Incredibly fast bike"
"Mechanic owned and ridden" (in fact, no regular person has even touched this bike. And has never been loaded onto a car carrier)
"Upgraded drive train to XX spec. Bike only has ~20 miles on it" (??)
"Used for half a season" (bike s from 2017..)
"no crashes" (bike has upgraded front wheel. Rear wheel is original..)
etc

Not really a rant, just an annoyance. Replacing pads on brakes and you notice a spoke is broken, shit. I guess I'll service my hubs now too while I'm at it.
Here's an annoyance. Local ski area bike trail has flagging tape up around a pit they are putting new lift towers into. Absolutely no warning beforehand of trail dead ending in a pit, just flagging tape up. Fuck, how hard is it to bench cut a trail in around the work area. Mountain coaster construction has been completed for over a year also and they still have a dead end up. I guess Bogus Basin just wants their $$$ and doesn't really care about the safety of their guests.
WTF, Bogus Basin mountain operations manager, Nate Shake, come on you lazy fuck and get your shit together.

I'm about to lose it over a mystery creak (while pedaling)....so far I've greased and retorqued:
-Pedals
-BB
-Crankarm
-Chain guide
-All suspension pivots
-Axles
-Rear derailleur pivots
-Derailleur hanger
-Seatpost clamp
So frustrating!!

Headset seems like the obvious one that's missing. It's always the headset.
Unless it's one of the other things.

The cassette itself. SRAM 11 and 12s sometimes do this. I cleaned and lubed the interface between the cassette and the threaded locking collar, and also the pins securing the 50t. Creak gone.
Also can clean and lube hub endcaps and actual freehub mechanism. There's nothing better than sliding down snow, and flying through the air
