A .45 mag is also recommended. In case of wolves.
Aim for the chopping block. If you aim for the wood, you will have nothing. Aim past the wood, aim through the wood.

Don't forget about the telemarketers. They are almost as bad as the pollsters.

I went after work tonight and it's thinning out quite a bit, only patches left on the bottom section of North Slope that I doubt will make it through the warm tomorrow and Thursday's rain. There will definitely be turns this weekend but you'll likely have to walk uphill a ways before you could start skinning.

So this is interesting. Ive been skiing this place for years.... It's the view from the front door of my house. I had no idea it was even being considered. Interesting that the US forest service gives a shit. Good for them. Nice work. Unless of course if they start to have a heavy hand on regulating this kind of thing.

    Huh? 2000?

"The uphill capacity of the T-Bar was increased and skiable terrain expanded for the 1948-49 season, to better handle the growing crowds projected from an improved Route 8. The expected crowds showed up, resulting in a then-record 2,000 skiers hitting the slopes one weekend in early February."

Mrs Peruvian grew up skiing Dutch Hill. Great pics of DH in the lodge at Prospect.

But it's still old news as we discussed it in last year's thread.

Big winds last night and a peak temp of 60` at 3AM melted most of the lower mountain snow. Should have gone out yesterday morning when it was frozen and hit the first corn of the season. Instead worked and went riding in the afternoon. With current summit temps of 47` I would think the snow is fairly isothermal at this point. An inch +- tomorrow of rain should help the groundwater levels which we need, the Mad has been so low the bush will be without water for snowmaking unless it rains on a regular basis this month.

    Plenty of snow Saturday

    Looked great yesterday

Not quite -- closed a few months before I moved from NY to MA.
But more important to me in a way since that's where my father first skied.
So if it wasn't for Dutch Hill, I might never have become a skier.

My father had grown up in a rather typical Eastern European immigrant family in the Boston area (Chelsea).
He wasn't even allowed to go sledding with all the other kids, since he had life-threatening asthma.
Back then, cold weather was thought to be a trigger for asthma.
So his protective mother kept him inside.
He always told me how he much he longed to join the other kids outside when he heard them having so much fun in the snow!

Here's an excerpt of an email he wrote me when I asked him about Dutch Hill a few years before he passed:

I was so scared that I spent a sleepless night. I had fears of asthma coming back when doing something in the winter cold. But then, I saw hordes of happy people skimming down the slopes and was instantly entranced. It was a beautiful sight. This is what I wanted to do.

    Nice story Jonathan.

I skied there a little bit in the early 90's, mostly just 'schwacked around on nordic skis. IIRC, someone blazed a trail from the top of Prospect to Dutch Hill, maybe Broomhall or Vigsnes.

"The new owner is a New York hedge fund manager."

    In other news:
"Weak returns and high redemptions have caused another hedge fund to slash fees to stem the exit of investors.

Troubled New York-based Och-Ziff Capital Management will be shaving 25 basis points off its multistrategy fund management fees — a move that will instantly siphon nearly $65 million from the $42 billion firm, and the pockets of its partners.
    ...."

Jefferies: "Hey guys, I have an idea that will make you rich!"
    Daniel Och: "What's that?"
    Jefferies: "Ski areas."
Daniel Och: "Sounds great, I'll put up my G650 as collateral!"
