PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. -- More firefighters have been brought in to help protect the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort as the Norse Peak Fire near Mount Rainier continues to grow. But there's still so much smoke that helicopters can't make water drops.

A huge system of sprinklers has been set up to keep the ground and buildings saturated should fire come this way. The fire has grown to more than 43,000 acres to the east of Crystal burning mostly in wilderness land. It is now getting close to the homes, cabins and resort buildings. The recreation spot has been closed since Monday.

"Obviously it's concerning," said Jesse Cartwright of Crystal Mountain Fire Department. "But we also want to make sure that if we have guests here that they're safe and without visibly being able to see what's going on it's not safe right now."

The smoky condition has been good in helping to keep the fire activity down, but it's also kept the firefighting helicopters grounded.

"What I'd really like to see is some fire retardant or some water be dropped on that and we can just be done with it," Crystal Mountain Resort owner Kim Kircher said.

Fire crews were keeping a wary eye on a flare-up on the ridge. It is the same area that roared to life Monday night catching everyone by surprise and forcing an immediate evacuation.

"I literally was just saying to somebody 'I don't think we need to worry' and then 'bam' we all walk outside and the whole hillside is on fire," Kircher said.

Her husband, John Kircher, said the flames are impressive.

"Pretty much any ridge that you can see that half mile to a mile long ridge top was in flames with probably 300 foot plumes," John Kircher said.

Late Wednesday afternoon wildfire trucks from Clark County were brought in to help the Crystal Mountain crews who were already getting help from Greenwater, Buckley, Enumclaw and Carbonado.

Just got back from riding - first time in two weeks, fourth in last month. Not as bad as vaping diesel but not spring air either. Still nice to get out and cough up all the crap that's accumulated over three weeks.

Smoke from Separation and Nash fires (which are no longer separated) on west side in Wilderness, plus remnants of Milli fire, is now flowing back into our basin as air dries. Mountains barely visible at 1055.

Everybody here is bummed. It would be cool if you come have dinner at Depot or Open Door. SFF is their biggest grossing weekend of the year.

I have Durban Girlz brownies for ya.

Hey folks! Hope that September has been treating everyone well! Quick question for Our Salem/Santiam brethren: how is the smoke near the pass/west of mill city? I have camping reservations for next weekend at fisherman's bend, trying to confirm that it will be worth heading down there. Thanks in advance, and I hope that everyone comes through unscathed... My family in FL took a beating from Irma, but are, for the most part, ok.

Incident Commander for the Milli Fire (out my backyard) told me the fire would not be contained until "the snow comes".

The fire incident info site https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5517/ says the fire will be fully contained October 1 at approx midnight.

Which means the snow comes October 1.

2016-2017 ORYGUN - Annual Pow, Beer, and Duct Tape Thread

In NOAA's Special Weather Statement today:

    614 AM PDT Sat Sep 16 2017

...COOL AND WET WEATHER ARRIVING NEXT WEEK...

A developing low pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska will settle over the Pacific Northwest next week. Expect much cooler temperatures and several rounds of rain and snow in the high
Cascades. Rain will begin Sunday afternoon and continue at times through much of the week. Snow levels will be around 9000 feet
Sunday then drop to 5000 to 6000 feet by Monday and remain near that level through the week.

People planning travel or outdoor activities, especially in the
mountains should be prepared for the changing conditions.

Let me know if you will make it CS.

edit: after a slight forecast change, Tues looks like my day. I'm flexible, so I'll update if that changes again.
