    Solar Eclipse 2017

Anyone planning for this already? I'm close to booking a cabin in the Smokies in the path of totality before people catch on.

Funny. Literally, just looked for campsites at Glendo State Park in Wyoming as a back up plan. They seem to be all booked up already.

21 seconds of totality at my house, more than 2 minutes up in Madras; I'm planning to head up there for the morning.

    Good info here: http://www.eclipse2017.org/2017/states/OR.htm

Nashville is gonna be money for the eclipse, but if you really want to make the most of it in TN book something in White House. It's away from the lights and directly in the path.

Ummmmm.....Why is being away from light pollution important for a solar eclipse?

Yup. Will be in Jackson then.
Good luck finding a hotel room. Everything sold out within a 200 mile radius.

You just cannot make this stuff up

    Moonstock

    A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

will be visible along a narrow path from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. According to NASA’s Eclipse 2017 website, the location along the path of totality that will experience the longest time in the moon’s umbral shadow is near Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL.

An estimated 200,000 tourists will travel to southern Illinois to observe the point of greatest duration.

The estimated duration of totality at Walker’s Bluff is 2 minutes 29.2 seconds.

On that day, at 1:20 pm, you can experience the light turn to darkness as

kicks off his concert with the song Bark at the Moon during the eclipse.

My solar filters for camera & scope just arrived yesterday.

Sure is a lot of hype over it in Jackson.

I'm planning on camping in the wind rivers and getting completely out of my mind with some friends. Very much looking forward to this.

Why would it be a joke? The eclipse is during the daytime. Obviously light pollution is not a concern. I suppose the darkness may cause street lights to come on automatically and things like that, but it seems to me any place with a clear view of the sky is a good place to view the eclipse.

Well, it gets as dark as the nighttime sky during the full eclipse part of it, so light pollution hurts the overall feel/photo ops for that section of it.

How much light pollution is there going to be during the daytime?

The same amount as at night. You don't think people are going to turn their lights on when it's dark?

    No, I don't.

Granted some lots will go on, but I think the majority of light pollution is caused by buildings and signage that are illuminated only at nighttime. I really don't think there will be nearly as many lights in use during the couple minutes of totality as at night.

    Merica needs their light.

What's surprising to me is how few fucking people even know about it.
I guess as long as they get their daily dose of the Kardashians and whatnot no one gives a shit at pretty much a once in a lifetime event.

    Wait till two weeks before.

What eclipse? ore likely it's coyote eating then sun, and if we pledge our fealty to the chief he will make coyote vomit up the sun again. Replace chief with god and we got most situations covered.)

We are preparing for Eclipsageddon here, traffic/tourist wise. Should be interesting. Might have to just park the car and ride everywhere for the week...

Good article that talks about watching it at elevation - amazing anyone could figure out where to be 100 yrs ago or earlier than that for totality

    https://www.seeker.com/space/astrono...ipse-explained

Similarly, Earth's elevation can have a surprisingly large effect on the visibility of the eclipse — if you're near the edge of the shadow, the elevation can lift you out of it or into it based on the angle of the sun and moon.
"For the Aug. 2017 eclipse, that's going to pass over the Cascades and the Rockies, and lots of observers that are at elevations that are several kilometers," Wright said. "And so the entire umbra, this is the central shadow, will shift to the southeast by several kilometers when you take into account that elevation."
Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Natures peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn. - John Muir

“This is infinity here,” he said. “It could be infinity. We don’t really don’t know. But it could be. It has to be something — but it could be infinity, right?” - Trump, on the vastness of space, man

    Yes it does.
"At this point we’ve reached totality and you will now be standing in the shadow of our Moon. A great black disc will replace our Sun. The sky will be so dark that the stars and planets near to the Sun and above our horizon will be visible, almost like night truly has enveloped us."

You need to figure out which side you're going to argue in favor of.
