Was actually 90% where I'm at, just used total for ease of explaining.

Could 2024 be a bigger event than 2017?

Fairly close to heavily populated northeast us.

    Spring break time for some.

"Repeat customers" from 2017 that want to see it again?

Those that missed out in '17, and hearing about it from those that didn't decide to go this time.

We were camping at a lake up in the white clouds in idaho with all our kids. I was psyched for the eclipse, but it truly blew me away, blew my wife away, and all our friends we were with. We had like 2 mins of totality. When it was over, we all started saying we're going to the next one. Amazing. Amazing. Absolutely loved it! Here's a few pics.

The traffic shitshow award goes to some friends of ours who left Madras for the Bay Area at 1PM yesterday, and (including getting through Madras) got home at 7:30 AM the next day, driving all night.

Us, well, we left Madras at around the same time, took an amusing detour almost to Prineville, then the O'Neill Highway to Redmond, where we stayed (I had time for a 2-hour hike and skinny-dip along the Deschutes before drinking beers and cooking dinner). Today was mildly nasty from Redmond to San Mateo, with slowdowns at various places along 97, getting through Weed, and around Redding; various side-roads proved useful.

The eclipse? It was swell. My 4th total. My 10-year-old kid loved it. Not much to add to some of the excellent descriptions up-topic here, except that I always come away from these feeling like our Sun has personality, and that life on Earth can be wonderfully goofy and weird.

Took my wife and baby girl up into the high country near Baker City, Oregon. Drove a long 4x4 track to 7000ft, camped and hiked around for a couple days, then climbed up to the high ridge to observe the eclipse. We had 340 degrees of horizon with probably 50 miles of isolation and 3500ft of prominence. What a sight, holy smokes. One of the most incredible things I've ever seen.

The skies were quite clear overhead, but there was a prominent smoke plume to the south and west, from the fires in the western part of the state. The smoke layer turned out to be an awesome factor... we could see the black shadow of the moon hauling ass across the scape in the smoke layer! The shadow front moves at like 1800mph... so cool.

Here are a few pics of our outing.

    Wallowas:

    Elkhorns:

    Camp cruisings:

    Eclipse:

Far-off shadow in the smoke, departing for points east (shitty pic, might put up a phone pic later):

Pinhole blanket on the mountain top:

Edit to add a couple cell phone pics...

Moon's shadow approaching, darkening the distant smoke layer:

    Horizon at totality:

After seeing all the pics and reading all the descriptions... Can I get a do-over?
