Broken glass looks really nice still surprisingly, suncups don't look too bad at all. Did your friend mention seeing any snow left in the chutes up barker pass?

BTW--hiking the 5 lakes trail yesterday I saw 2 small solar contraptions--one roughly halfway up the trail on top of a weathered granite outcropping and the other high above the upper part of the trail on a grainite outcropping just below the KT-HW ridge. Any idea what they are. The first one is in the middle of nothing, wouldn't seem to have anything to do with the ski area, and the other, while close to the ski area is outside the boundary signs. I didn't see any obvious wires heading towards Troy's house and the solar panels are pretty small.

Self-powered weather stations? I've seen them around (e.g. south of the summit on Mt Lincoln).

    I hit it today.

Gotta say that it must have melted a tad in the 6 days since you posted your picture.

It was interesting, to say the least.
Only about a 15-minute trek from the parking area to the snow.
The field is more of a strip now, with a double fall-line; a semi-flat top "ridge" and then uber short, slightly steep lines down toward the lake. It is also an enchanted forest of bent trees, which made the skiing less of skiing and more of an obstacle course (i'd make a turn, stop, side-step up a few feet, then make another turn and so on).
    The snow was decent, though.
I managed to ski about 3/4 of the strip utilzing the semi-flat ridge line and managed to pinch out 11 turns.
I banged out a few lakeside fall-line runs and managed to squeeze 6 hops turns out of one of them (the standard length of these runs-- following the natural turning radius of my skis--was 3 turns).
Not exactly sure if it was worth the effort as it was akin to what one usually finds to ski in late September/early October on a "normal" snow year...but I was coming back from Napa, so it was on the way home and easy enough to get to late in the afternoon.

While out there, I scared a water fowl that was rusty brown and cream colored and had a head shaped like a loon. Also saw these two birds "fighting" one another in the air; they were black and white, kind of shaped like an albatross. Not sure what either of these two birds were as I'm rather weak on the bird chasing tip.

Summer topic: Anyone know why there's almost always traffic on the I-80 corridor between Davis and Sacramento? There seem to be few on-ramps, no lanes lost (I don't think), and only agricultural land in the vicinity. It's maddening.

It's called the Yolo Causeway. Remember the eastbound merge west of Davis? And a second one after Mace? It drops from 5 to 3 lanes in a few miles. Westbound has two freeways feeding into one.

It's the "tendency for humans to pursue “selfish routing” strategies, at the cost of the larger network."

I get the same thing on my commute. Basically too many cars to handle humans selfish nature.

Seems to me it's still 16/17 until the first snow of the new season starts to fly. Still plenty of good snow out there.

Me'n Vets skied some mostly south-facing, overlooking HWY 431, sweet 'n soft, sun-cupless strips (and one field) above and below the Relay Peak service road yesterday (7.19.17).
25-minute leisurely hike to snow from the Mt. Rose Summit TH parking lot.
Strips were 10+ turns long (following the natural radius of the ski and not forcing short radius turns). Ditto for the field. We also skied a multi-patch obstacle course because it was there (about 5 patches currently not connected, but which would have been a sweet and long run about a month ago).
A nice, solid, quick hit for those on a time crunch.
Get it while it's good, as it will probably start diminishing in the next few weeks.

FWIW, the slide path above Chickadee Ridge still goes (see picture #2 below).

Thanks for keeping the stoke/reports going here, Dookey. May have to bring my daughters out that way for some turns (appreciate the hike time/strip length info!).

Here's some beta from Hawks Peak (looking toward Castle, etc) for anyone looking for patches. Seems to be some nice ones left if you're up for a hike.

    * I have to say I like our blue-capped smoke better than that NV smoke above Chickadee. Either way, what a bummer!

Rode the Thunder Mountain/Horse Canyon loop near Kirkwood yesterday, took a couple beta shots of the Carson pass area, looks like maybe the left hand arm of the moon still goes with a long apron exit in case someone wants to check it out. Woods lake is open now for access also

About 12:30 PM, had some kind of bug hit me hard starting on my ride yesterday which landed me in bed for like 20 hours, at about 80% of normal now, but if I'm feeling better in the AM I may go poke around out there to see how things look up close tomorrow.
