Lift is down with a power issue but the area is open. Turn right at the trees or be prepared to hike.
SB sucks, I hear there's a resort over the hill with friendly management and well-run lift ops and they'll even let you dig out chairs. Go there instead.
Speaking of digging, I went in search of my propane tank:
That's a 16 foot long 2x2 that's still well below the snow level (had to dig for a while to find it). The hole is about 20 feet deep.

I do wonder. Because apparently all the tickets they wrote this week to locals parked on the side of the road completely out of the way did nothing to stop a tourist from parking in front of the closure gate.
And if the snow barrier was still there like it was wednesday I can easily see someone missing the no parking sign

Instead of boarding the Blowtown express, we somehow ended up on the Buffville local bus.
KB on fast wind affected but wonderfully edgeable snow in the shadow of elephant's back.

MAKE TAHOE DEEP AGAIN ~ 2016/17 OFISHUL SNOW/FOOD/WHINE & STOKE THREAD
Anybody else see the large snow cat (winch-capable) at a filling stall of the sugar bowl gas station? Haven't seen that before....

Curious, what is the worst Squaw could do if you got caught skiing off the backside of Granite Chief Peak besides pulling your pass? I'm guessing nothing after seeing this: https://www.instagram.com/p/BQ9uj7Ej...drianballinger
I'm gonna have to start sessioning this zone on my split out of spite. As long as I don't come back to the lifts you should be legit. It's not like they have patrollers with touring gear on the ready to chase you.

You guys are killing it. Thanks for the stoke. I've been stuck resort skiing, hanging with the family. It could have been worse. KW skied really well the past few days, and was quite uncrowded. Except for chairs 2 and 4, which did had a line that I found not worth waiting in. Maybe 10 minutes. Intolerable.
The only hard part was looking off toward Emigrant without the time or partner to go hit up some very tasty looking lines. Here's all I got for stoke.

The worst they can do is 86 you. But people poach geo bowl back to granite plenty without getting caught. If they do somehow happen to see you they won't chase you but they will wait for you at the road. If you're doing something like hiking the crest, they used to generally let you if you ask, that was under Alex though

We found good cold pow around 5800 feet, 2 mile drytool from the trailhead unless you got a friend in a certain private housing community in which case you can start skinning right away. Although two of us busted trail for 5200 feet in pretty good snow the line was not that great, moments of glory, but some funky snow up high, after slide bed surfaces and debris down lower, we got out of it and went into some complex terrain lookers right of the line and did get some great turns, but the work/reward ratio just is not there right now. Saw a group of 4 or 5 drop jaws, looked like ok turns lower down, but they said the upper part skied pretty funky, they came from luther, so there are skin tracks from both sides for the motivated right now.

Alpenglow is now running paid guided touring out of Squaw, which I'm sure is what this was. They let you pay $645 a day for a guided tour! Cool for Alpenglow but basically a kick in the teeth for everyone else. Makes me want to take a huge crew with sleds back there and poach whatever they are skiing just to make a point. As long as you don't enter/exit Squaw gates it has to be legal. Add it to the list of reasons I'm fucking done with Squaw.

Yep, they've been doing it all season. But honestly, there's plenty of backcountry options all over the area so I don't see what the big deal is. I mean, I guess it's lame that they allow guided tours to duck the boundary rope but don't create proper access gates for those of us who don't need a guide, but meh. Adrian is a nice guy, I don't hold it against him.

I've been wondering how much business they are getting. Yeah, for any of us that is a ridiculous amount of money to pay for something we can do for nothing, but there are a lot of people with money to throw around. Don't know the dude, but seems to be big on self promotion and kind of a dick move taking people to those spots, particularly around AM.

Just to be clear, Alpenglow Expeditions, run by Adrian and leading the Squaw guided tours, is completely unrelated to Alpenglow Sports in Tahoe City. There is no relationship between the two and there never has been.
This has been confused and some alternative facts stated on the interwebz already this year. The Alpenglow Sports guys are awesome standup people and big on the local community.
Not saying anyone was confusing them here, but it wasn't clear and should be stated.

I did not know, just assumed they were one in the same. Good to know. I don't harbor any ill will towards either one of the Alpenglows...again, more power to whoever talked Squaw into letting them do that. It's just downright insulting to the general public that Squaw will let you leave the area if you pay someone $645 (which I'm sure a hefty portion is going back to Squaw) but they will pull your pass if you do it yourself, like you can everywhere else. Just think how much more business Squaw would have (and possibly more importantly - how much more favorable of an image they would have) if they just embraced the sidecountry aspect like Jackson does and made it frictionless for people to access all of that good sidecountry terrain through gates. Instead, it's the mentality of a closed system where they bleed as much fucking $$ as possible out of their guests.
Yes I understand the additional liability, the possible need for out of bounds rescue, etc...and all the other factors that go into that. Jackson and other resorts do it and survive, no reason Squaw can't. It follows with the long established pattern of bad business decisions. Fuck Squaw/KSL. And yeah this should probably be in the KSL thread Sorry for the thread hijack...
