I'm thinking someone wasn't too happy about the early closing with all of that snow on the ground. Heh.

There's still quite a bit of decent lines up on Lola. This is one of the two north facing backside patches. this one was wide and moderately steep. it broke at the treeline at the bottom and continued, but the lower portion cliffed-out.

The other backside run is long (broken at the top 1/3), but still skiable with a meager portage (basically stepping your skis over a few rocks and thin spots).

The ridge, just under the summit proper, is still solid, too.

Sadly, we cut our tour short due to impending weather and threats of lightning/thunder.

The weather gods just aren't shining in my favor this week. Cut yesterday's tour short due to threatening weather.
Today, when I got out to "The Nipple" around 4:30, I was welcomed by yet another sky of impending bad weather (it looked and smelled like it had recently rained, but a thick mass of ominous, grey clouds hung over "The Nipple" and the surrounding ridge). Due to what looked like unpredictable weather to me, I banged out 2 quick laps and packed it in.
The snow was moderately cupped and a bit "icey", perhaps from the recent rain.
Wish I'd been able to have taken a few more laps.
That said, if you live in South Lake, Meyers, Carson City, or Minden/Gardnerville, this is a quick hit with some decent, albeit kinda short, lines still for the skiing/riding.

I know it's never going to happen but I would love it if KSL would offer an Alpine only ski pass

    4th Of JULY CHUTES BOWLS - 8.19.19

Gonna go on record and make the call: The 4th of July Chutes Bowls are officially done.

Hit them up this morning and only the first bowl still has skiable snow.

    Longest run = 7 turns
    Shortest run = 3 turns

snow was decent, though; soft, smearable, edgeable, and mild on the suncup tip.

Good for a quick Saturday morning jaunt (I have a wedding to attend this afternoon, so needed something I could bang out fast), but, yeah, they're pretty much cooked.

Is the Squaw/Alpine pass any more expensive this year than last year? I don't want a pass to a mountain I can't get to/park at.

Re : Housing. There is a serious housing crunch for workers in Tahoe. People have always had to scratch out an existence to live in paradise, but it sounds like it's gotten a lot worse over the past few years due to the loss of long term rentals. But if you think about it, second home owners would much rather rent for a week to tourists who have credit cards on file to cover damages rather than renting to 7 recent high school grads who are gonna trash their place and most likely leave in the spring. Prediction: Communities/neighborhoods that limit the usage of short term rentals are gonna become the defacto slums over time.

In 2013 it wasn't that difficult to find decent long term housing in South Lake. We paid like $1300 for a nice 2/1 with a garage, fenced yard and great landlords. Good luck finding anything like that now. The only realistic solution I can see is employee housing at the resorts, similar to what already exists in Kirkwood.

A little bit, but not enough to make any difference. Nothing like having to leave Truckee before 7am just to make sure you find a spot. No thanks.

Looks like there's going to be a total eclipse right over Lake Tahoe on August 12, 2045. Make sure to mark your calendars.

As of last week, The developer has secured the required funding through another source and will be breaking ground/ moving along as planned pretty soon. Don't know why the Sierra Sun can't report on that, but it was announced at a community arts alliance meeting. Can't comment on how they will remediate the site...

My understanding is that the railyard project of which the artists lofts are part is going forward but the artists lofts themselves are still on hold. I don't see anything new in Moonshine Ink, Sierra Sun, the Railyard web site, or the Town website but your information could certainly be more recent.

Yeah, I thought the artists lofts were actually included in the development to qualify for that tax deduction from the state. The artist's lofts were recently included as a cornerstone in the town's ( and arts non-profits) bid for the CA Cultural District assignation, which Truckee received, and why Nancy Holliday was talking about the funding in the first place. So I guess the lofts will happen anyway, which is not new news, but will happen despite no tax relief from the state and with new funding from elsewhere. I haven't looked at the phasing of the plan recently.

You need to go further N, to at least I-80 in Truckee to get any totality as the furthest N part of Lake Tahoe (Incline Village) will only be 99.9% eclipsed. Reno will have about 2 minutes and 45 seconds of totality. The centerline of the 2045 eclipse runs between Red Bluff and Redding, and between Mt Lassen and Mineral and just S of Susanville and will have 4 1/2 minutes of totality. See http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages...6&Zoom=13&LC=1

And while a 99% eclipse is only 1% percent away from totality and sounds good, it is 4000x as bright as totality and not the same experience.

A sign of things to come--sign on the door of the Rock Garden. "We are closed Saturdays and Sundays because we can't hire any help." Plan on seeing a lot more signs like that.
