Yup. Love them. Great horned owls are pretty much their only threat (they have little or no sense of smell). Less than 5 percent of skunk mortality is caused by predators.

Here's another shot. They went to town. So nice because those nests are in vole homes with many exits which makes them hard to deal with. Click image for larger version.

Can you train them to cover up the holes when they're done so you or your horses don't step in one?

Hopefully that gives the #yolo tourists some inspiration, we could use some fodder for both the darwin and the yellowstone tourist threads.

On a trip years ago we saw a wolf staring down and nipping at an injured bison. I didn't have a DSLR with telephoto lens like the other 500 people watching so its a bit grainy. Pretty cool to see in person though

Did you actually see the skunk? Are you sure it wasn't a honey badger?

    I'm not expert but....

The basis principle is simple: female praying mantises have 6 abdominal segments while males have 8. The final segment of the female is much larger than the others while the male has several small segments towards the end of the abdomen. ... Counting the abdominal segments of a mantis will tell you its sex.

Plus all the pics I find on the internet of females eating males look like the pic I took so I'm going with my original post. Post coitus snack.

This little guy just set up camp in my barn. Looks like he found a pretty good spot, and he's connected to the snowblower which I won't need for a couple months at least. I'm gonna leave him be and see what he can catch.

Based on this I think it might be a Cross Orb Weaver?

I found a good size hole in my front lawn a couple weeks ago. Went down about 10 inches and was about 8 inches wide. Almost perfectly cylindrical. I had no clue what animal would dig that sort of hole. A friend said skunks will do that to dig up ground bees. Sure as shit there were small pieces of honeycomb in the dirt pile. I hope the skunks stay around because we always have ground bees in our yard.

That’s awesome. When I was a kid (in my twenties) I worked as a trail guide and whenever we saw a critter, it was almost always from that perspective. I used to tell people I was working on putting out a coffee table book full of glossy ass- angle shots of animals running away and would call it A Practical Guide To Wildlife Identification

Skunks are actually beneficial as are oppossum.

Hey, most humans can't figure out roundabouts, good for them.

I saw a pine marten this summer driving over Independence Pass, ran across the road right in front of me. I couldn't believe it, I never thought I'd get to see one. When I came home I was describing it to my six year old, and said they're just big weasels, but they're stronger and meaner. She says what's a weasel look like? I say, it's basically a slinky covered in fur. This is what she came up with:
