    Yikes! RIP.

That article says 25 yards except Bear and Wolf at 100. That’s already amazingly close for something that can run 30 mph, which probably includes bison elk and moose. A moose trampled someone’s dog to death somewhere here in CO on a trail (kinda?) recently. Sad.

I agree 25 yards doesn't seem like much but the way those bison hang around the tourist boardwalks would make it somewhat impractical to make it farther. It would likely result in people walking far off the boardwalks and into the thermal areas, which presents its own danger.

Fun buff facts - they use buffalo (yeah I know bison) to train cutting horses because they're quicker than cows. An adult buff can reach top speed (30 mph+) from a standing start in three strides.

When I was living down there working on the canyon lodges, we were staying in the old cabins, and our resident buffs - tweedle dee and tweedle dum, lived right there with us. Two gigantic bulls, they were probably brothers and probably dropped not far away. We'd be playing basketball in the evening and they'd literally graze right through the game. We'd have to take a break to let them pass. Sometimes you'd walk around a corner of the cabin and one of them would be right there snoozing. Like I said, you have to tweak them pretty hard to get a reaction.

30 mph--that's 50% faster than a human or 6 times faster than the average tourist.
The plains Indians hunted buffalo on foot with spears and arrows before the Spanish arrived with guns and horses. That took balls.

20mph top speed must be top 5% of all humans, no? 30mph is like the laziest bison. Yeah, 6, lol.

    Prionus beetle.

When I was a boy scout, I worked one summer as a counselor at a camp in the southern sierras. One day this young scout comes into the nature center holding something in his hands, "Look at what I caught!". We all crowded around and he opened up his hands to show off a huge Prionus. Everyone was "Oooooohhh.." A few seconds later another kid said, "Hey, those things bite!" Just then that beetle nailed the kid right on the web between a couple fingers. I can still hear the scream. It was awesome.

ha! That’s rad. I wasn’t aware that Hank could bite. Glad I didn’t actually kiss it.

I would shoot at that fucking thing with a shotgun. Probably miss. Throw the gun at it and miss again. Then, I’d run inside but fail to close the door in time to not let hank in, tripping over the end table. Seeing hank enter I’d run upstairs and try to hide under the covers but I can hear it coming up the stairs. As hank approaches my bedroom door my last resort is to jump through the window into my pool that was never built because I got a jelly of the month subscription instead, and splat out onto the concrete. The beetle clicks in glory, eats the eyeballs from my corpse and moves on to its next victim.

Beetle can be heard to mockingly say: “Who’s “over-rated” now, motherfucker!!!”

Hopefully this is a sign of a major rebound. They came for a drink in the backyard.
