Paddle in the Hudson

This is my 4th Summer paddling in the Hudson.
(though I couldn't paddle much last year due to NYCM training)
Hope to do a tour or two before the water gets too cold.
I paddle with Manhattan Kayak Company.
Is there any other paddler in NYC area?

Those big cruises create some massive wakes.

Hudson is very busy waterway.
There are big cruises, water taxis, private boats, yachts, freight ships...
It definitely gets pretty dicey time to time.
When there's a sizable ship passes by, we normally huddle together and try to get out of the way.



Once I paddle crossed the Hudson to New Jersey and back on a SUP, it was one of the scariest moments.
I felt like I was playing Frogger on the water.

Yeah, I saw that story in the news tonight. Hope they are going to be ok. I was thinking how crazy that must have been for you to SUP across to NJ down that way. I live further north and it's busy with all the new bridge stuff going on.

I'm not surprised and won't stop me from paddling.
(anything can happen to anybody over literally doing nothing)
But my friend who paddles with me is pretty shaken up.
Especially we were at the same spot only two days ago.

I may lost my paddling buddy.

Okay, now things got really weird.
This is Jay who I toured many times and he was our tour guide two nights ago.
Wow...
I can't believe he was the one who was leading this group.
I know for fact he's a very safety comes first kinda guy.
Glad he's still alive.

There were 11 kayakers total and 4 got hurt.
Jay was the tour guide who got hurt the most.
(severe compound fracture of his arm, partially severed)

Still under investigation.
But they think the ferry was pulling out with extremely bright conditions from the sun to the west and didn't see the kayakers.
Ran them over and some got crash or the wake capsized them.

Probably last kayak tour this year.
Water temperature is still warm, so might throw another SUP tour instead

Man, it seems a scary thing to kayak in The Hudson. it sucks that sportsmen have it every time more dangerous and not from practicing the sport, but from dealing with this kind of shit.

Crowded water way like that rules of the road change. Little boat needs to stay out of the way of the big boat.

I mean, there are certain things about nyc that make no sense to try...i.e. kayaking in the hudson. Not really sure what point you're trying to make? I saw some people kayaking in the gowanus on IG feed lately. Like wtf is the point of that? You are just asking for water-borne illness and floating needles.

Like, yeah, go take a stance and paddle in the Hudson. Sorry but not much sympathy towards boat traffic incidents... kinda like if you try biking on the west side highway!

kayaking in nyc is sweet. meg, you should check out the north brooklyn boat club. i used to be a member there, had an awesome time on and off their docks although i’d really like to paddle jamaica bay sometime.

I'll be impressed when you run the east river at flood tide. Been through there a few times on small sailboats. The first trip was a 21 foot Freedom. Between the tugs, whirlpools, and 6 foot standing waves it was spicy. Then someone threw a bottle at us from the Brooklyn Bridge. Lol. Whitewater is safer.

I used to work for the owner of the Lincoln Harbor Yacht club (next to the Lincoln Tunnel) and occasionally would have to work on boats there, He was big into Striped Bass restoration and in the Board Room they had a giant tank about 25' long filled with Stripers about that size. The table was made of teak and holly (like the deck of a boat) had about 6 Scopinich fishing chairs on each side with a Scopinich righting chair on each end.

My wife and I circumnavigated Manhattan Island in our kayaks years ago. It was a 35-mile trip I think, long day. We went with a kayak club based in New Jersey. The guy who led the trip had done it a bunch of times and told stories about finding dead bodies in the East River. I remember racing against the Staten Island ferry to get from the Statue of Liberty across to the southern tip of Manhattan was quite "exciting." In the afternoon we came down the Hudson in a pretty big swell, that was a little sketchy too. I think the year we did it was the year before the Twin Towers came down. Awesome experience. The club even gave us a certificate for completing the trip. We still got 'em hanging on the wall.
