No mention of her being arrested and having to post bail, either. In CO, "careless driving causing death" is a Class 1 Misdemeanor punishable by $300 to $1,000 in fines and 10 days to 1 year in the County Jail. Read that again, max of $1,000 and/or one year in county jail for fucking killing someone. And people wonder why cyclists get riled up about this shit.

This came up in the related articles, 37-year old mother of two young boys (one 4 years old, the other nine months) riding in a designated bike lane:

"Without aggravating factors like drugs, alcohol, a hit and run or texting while driving, careless driving is the most appropriate charge, according to Denver attorneys. Penalties include points on a driver’s license, up to a $1,000 fine and/or 10 days to one year in jail.

Governor Jared Polis signed a bill in May increasing penalties for careless driving resulting in the serious bodily injury of a ‘vulnerable road user,’ including cyclists, construction workers or scooter riders. The bill initially considered increasing penalties for careless driving resulting in death but ultimately took that provision out."

WHAT THE MOTHERFUCKING FUCK? I'm surprised her husband hasn't murdered that fucking guy. I sure as fuck would have by now. Just run his ass over while sober and not texting and stay at the scene.

At least that woman appears to have been arrested (https://www.9news.com/article/news/c...8-ec6328de5594), though I'll be shocked if she faces felony charges if DUI or texting wasn't involved.

For the record, I road ride for transportation in street clothes. Lycra and drops as a purely recreational activity is a hard pass, NTTAWWT.

In our neck of Paradise, a small but vocal group of citizens bitch about The Spandex Mafia, a group of retired men who ride three abreast as they leave town on their weekly road ride. Note that our commercial district is 5x5 blocks with 20mph speeds.

We've lost 4 riders in just a few days here in NY to hit and run drivers. A kid and a 64 year old man on Long Island and two up by Rochester, both men in their 50's. This hit and run thing is disgusting and the fact that the penalties are nearly nonexistent is enough to make you sick if you think about it too much.

I don't have any stats to point to but the general feeling in the Toronto area is hit and runs are way up lately. Sickening.

While I don’t agree with the light punishment for reckless driving resulting in a fatality, I will say that fatalities involving a second car are similarly prosecuted from my antidotal experience. Big civil penalties but not much criminal.

I went out for drinks after work this week and was off my usual route when I started biking home. In a neighborhood with very wide streets and stop signs every block or two, the bike lane disappeared so I was riding in the usual "just outside the door zone" position in the lane and the car behind me started honking, polite little beeps like you use to tell someone their coffee mug is on top of their car. I looked around and hadn't dropped anything, so decided they were honking at someone else.

They were still honking a half-block later, and we were at a tee intersection where everyone had to stop anyway, so I pulled over and asked them "hey, what's up?" The driver said in a tone of mild exasperation, like the tone you use when your cat brings home a dead mouse, "You're in the way..." I explained to him that given the disappearing bike lane, I was riding exactly where I was supposed to be, and that he should feel free to go around - these were easily 15 foot travel lanes, with no oncoming traffic. He still seemed to feel like I should be riding my bike somewhere else, so I thanked him for not hitting me and we called it a night. No complaints, it beats the heck out of those interactions where they rev the engine or try to sideswipe you, but it really makes me feel like we need to do better on driver's ed.

The strange irony here, at least in most US jurisdictions, is that hit-and-run is an aggravating factor that will get you felony charges when/if you're found (which in this day and age you probably will be). If you're sober, not texting, etc., and you stay at the scene most likely you'll face very few legal consequences

I'm not surprised. The big difference is that what would be a basic two-car fender bender with no or minor injuries becomes critical injuries and fatalities with bikes and pedestrians. But, yes, in general the justice system often provides a shocking degree of leniency for killing people with your car. Sadly, it's unlikely to change any time soon.

Not bike related, but this pos only got 45yrs for purposely running over two people, killing one and their dog. They already had a restraining order against her. If she had shot him she would most likely have received life in NH because it was premeditated.

As best I can tell after a jaunt on the American River Bike Trail, either cyclists have never heard of Covid19 or they believe that go 20 MPH makes you immune, because very few people I passed or who passed me--and there were a lot of people out--seemed to have any concept of distancing.
