I think its partly this. I think he went down the twitter/reddit/4chan rabbithole where being the biggest troll or holding the most outrageous opinions makes you cool- and if you can shout out a meme or and inside joke on a large stage, you are the coolest. he has a history of being controversial just for controversy's sake and i think that is what all this is. Probably stems from issues with his childhood where he was never cool, or accepted, and all the cool kids picked on him, so this is him just trying to be king of the (incel) nerds. Musk is the kinda guy that would benefit tremendously from some serious therapy to work through his issues, but he thinks he is too smart/succesful to go to therapy... its truly a shame for everyone as he could accomplish even more if he didnt self sabotage all the time. Frustrating.

Actually, Elon is following the Trump school of public relations aka there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Ever noticed how Elon's companies spend almost nothing on advertising? Ford and GM burn around $2 to 3 billion each on marketing every year but Tesla spends next to nothing. That is because Elon firmly believes that saying outrageous shit is much more effective than traditional advertising. He's on record saying that.

Of course, now that he wants to make money selling advertising space on Twitter, he's stopped publicly saying that ad campaigns are garbage. He might even start running Tesla ads on Twitter just so he won't look like a massive hypocrite to the ad buyers.
