As elite performers, maybe they should ask for raises.

And for those looking at unemployment - the severance is far more valuable to a software engineer. Unemployment pays peanuts compared to writing software. And most engineers would rather work than twiddle their thumbs. A few may enjoy a short severance=paid break before starting their next gig. I'd ski for three months if it were me.
