It's summer, don't forget to remove batteries from beacons.

Dead batteries do bad things in enclosed electronic devices, don't forget to remove them during the off season.

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

Start fixing up all of your skis one step per day. Give up when it comes to the ptex scraping stage. Look at the skis again in November and tell yourself that next time you'll finish the job at the start of summer.

I like to put on a heavy summer wax layer, don't scrape. Protects the ptex from oxidizing, and prevents potential damage when they inevitably get moved around in some garage reorganization.

...and, remember to clean yer bases of pollen build up before your first ski tour in the fall. Skin glue doesn't like pollen gunk...well actually, it likes it a bit too much; pair bonding.

Batteries leaking destroyed my first tracker. Take them out, put some preventative wax on skis, and don't worry. Winter is coming

If batteries are left in over the summer, and they leak, the beacon is pretty much a goner right? Asking for a friend.

Short, safe answer, is YES. Clean it up as best one can without hard abrasive or chemicals, and send it in for repair and testing. If all is ok or repairable, then the manufacturer will likely re-certify its use and send it back.

That said, I have cleaned corroded contacts in many devices, including an older analog beacon, with a small wire brush/sandpaper/toothbrush, and they have worked just fine afterwards. YMMV.

I keep thinking, would I bet my life on this? I hadn't thought of sending it in for recertification though. Might just be a reason to upgrade.

That explains my last time out. Any need to clean skins after a bunch of glue sticks to skis from pollen. I might be due for a reglue anyhow.

I keep skins in the freezer in a plastic bag. Ymmv. But it seems to keep them fresh.

Is it for the glue or the fur?

So, two beacons have been lying on the floor, next to my gloves which have been dry for a couple weeks. Pulling the batteries out so early in the year had so much finality associated with it.

I made peace with it and they've been pulled for the year.
