Hand pumped up to 40 psi and had an 8" section where the bead wouldn't slide the last couple mm to the bead lock. I stupidly thought that 5 more psi would do the trick. Once my ear stopped ringing and my dog calmed down after the tire blew off the rim it was pretty apparent that the bead somehow broke/stretched and there is no way that it'll hold air again.
When I taped the rim I had some sharp bits of aluminum around a spoke hole so put down 2 layers of Gorilla tape for about 6 inches. The place where the bead wouldn't slide into the bead lock was pretty close to that so I think the problem was my tape job preventing the bead from engaging?

Gorilla tape seems to make the bead super tight and it may not pop right in. It's pretty thick, though, wouldn't double up on it. I guess that could make it explode, but at 45psi?!
Hope your ear and dog are ok.
Maybe us a file or coarse sandpaper on the metal shards?
I'm a fan of the g tape.

This is a good reminder to wear eye protection when seating tires.

Funny post-script here: I ordered a BrandX dropper along with the set of tires that they cancelled. Well, the seatpost was delivered today and it arrived in what seemed to be an unusually large box. Opened it up and there was a single MagiX Rock'R2 Enduro in there. I checked my CRC account and credit card statement and there's no sign they've charged me for it. Free tire day!

Anybody running WTB Byways on their gravel bike? My new digs have me downtown so the rides are more 50/50 pavement/gravel with fewer class 4 roads than years past. The center file tread seems like it would be great when on a firm surface. I'm just wondering if the 700x44 Byway can handle some single track or jeep tracks.

Byways are great tires. Give them a shot.

How have things shaken out in the foam insert field? Based on the number of dents in the rim of the rear wheel I moved over to my new hardtail I'm thinking an insert might be prudent.

I ran/run a LG1 Plus on the back last year. Now it's on the back of my hardtail. I really like it as a rear tire, around here a semi-slick is pretty perfect for most of the riding season. It felt like it rolled marginally faster than the Minion SS I had on before, cornered and braked about the same, and has held up pretty well.
I was really hard on rear wheels/tires last year. Maybe because I was riding an over-forked Smuggler like an idiot on chunky shuttle and lift-accessed trails without inserts. But I was really impressed with the casing on the LG1, had a bunch of hits that I thought were gonna pinch flat it and didn't. Probably going to get another one when I get a new bike. Really dig that tire.
